Summary: Worth its weight in platinum
Comment: Having read a pile of homebuying books, I would rate this one tops for six reasons:(1) The author clearly knows what he is talking about from experience--unlike too many authors who are primarily journalist or biased real estate agents.(2) It's easy and fun to read. (3) It gives dozens of ways to buy with little or even nothing down. (4) It reveals scams and tricks that real estate and mortgage "profesionals" use to fleece the unknowing. (5)The author knows real estate across the country--not just in California or other specific locales(i.e., too many HB books are written by writers who don't seem to know that Chicago or San Francisco aren't the areas where most people are buying). (6)Unbelivebly, the author lists his telephone number and email in the book so as to invite comments and questions. I queried and he called and talked 20 minutes to adress my concerns. And no, he didn't charge me or try to sell me any more books and tapes.

Summary: Absolutely, positively an indispensable book for FTHBs!
Comment: This book is absolutely, positively an indispensable book for First Time Home Buyers! I started my homesearch prior to doing any research on the process. I smartened up and bought this book along with Homebuying for Dummies. I read this one first and was amazed at how much I learned. It prepared me immensely for the very intimidating process of buying your first home. EVERYONE should read this book prior to even selecting a realtor(and I even know now that having your own realtor is not even necessary!)

The second book, Homebuying for Dummies, after reading "106..." seemed a bit too simplistic(a testimonial to how thorough "106..." is). It was good as a reference for more in-depth discussion of issues raised in "106...", but I skipped over a lot of the subject matter as I read because it had already been sufficiently addressed in the first book.

So, don't even hit the pavement driving around looking at neighborhoods until you buy "106..."!

Summary: Saved our bank account
Comment: We had just read one of the guru real estate books that told us the great advantages of buying with a lease option when you need a little more time to rebuild your credit or add to your down payment money. That was us. We next found a willing "seller" with a house we liked. But just before we signed the papers, a friend gave us a copy of this book and told us to read the sections on lease options.Oh my God! It was clear we were about to be scammed. We were dealing with a con artist who purposely sucks people into L/Os to keep their option money. The story's much longer, but you get the point. Once we left that near mistake, I finished reading this book. Wow! I couldn't believe how little about buying and financing we really knew relative to what we thought we knew from reading other authors. For info we didn't find elsewhere, we highly recommend 106 Mistakes.
