Summary: A "must-have" text in an exploding new field.
Comment: This book offers valuable insights to corporate America's changing attitudes relative to patent portfolios. In their latest book, I was happy to see innovation experts DeMatteis and Gibbs leave the "how to" stuff about new product development and patent procurement to the seemingly endless ranks of "me too" authors, to plow a fresh field with its own unique jargon and tons to learn about. An early entry in the emerging genre of intellectual capital mangement,"Essentials of Patents" is certain to have scores of others following closely on its heels. For readers with budding curiosity or growing responsibility in this interesting field, however, this work itself is an "essential."

Summary: A "Must Read" for Patent Managers
Comment: Essentials of Patents teaches the realities of patent management in today's cut-throat corporate world. It provides an in-depth analysis of patent strategy for companies of various sizes. Regardless if your current patent portfolio consists of 5 patents or 500 patents, you will gain valuable knowledge on how to effectively manage these intangible assets while simultaneously developing future patent assets. Effective intellectual property management requires the entire company to understand important patent management strategies from employment agreements to patent infringement. Essentials of Patents also teaches companies how to manage their patent rights resulting in increased company value. Whether you want to learn how to develop an overall patent management strategy or simply want to learn how to effectively license your technology, this book provides the tools you need. Intangible assets, including patents, are typically a company's most valuable asset. Effective Patent Quality Management (PQM) should be mastered by all managers, not just corporate counsel. PQM requires a team approach for a company to succeed. Essentials of Patents is the 'survival guide' no team should proceed without. One of the top five books all intellectual property managers should have on their desk. Michael S. Neustel, U.S. Patent Attorney.

Summary: Competia Online Magazine Review
Comment: Essentials of Patents is an insightful guide for business professionals who seek to have a better understanding of patents for strategic intelligence purposes. The book provides readers with the basics behind the nature of patents, the importance of patents when it comes to measuring corporate wealth, and a straightforward approach to establishing a Patent Quality Management (PQM) system.

The authors have broken down the content of the book into two distinct sections.

The first four chapters of the book are dedicated to the fundamentals of patents in the corporate world. Gibbs and DeMatteis discuss in detail the key aspects behind patent licensing, strategy, and tactics to make better business decisions.

The next six chapters focus on the management of patents within various departments in large companies. Readers are given examples of how patents can influence the way managers adjust their plans in marketing, engineering, manufacturing and operations. In addition, the authors share their views on how patents should be managed by finance, human resources and information technology departments.

The final two chapters discuss the role legal counsel and the CEO take on in a company that has a Patent Quality Management (PQM) system. After reading these chapters, readers will have a better idea of how critical the legal department and CEO are to managing existing and future patents.

Competitive intelligence practitioners who are not experts in the domain of patents, must read Essentials of Patents. When they are collecting information on patents, whether it is to track their competitors' new products or analyze the competitions' R&D abilities, they should keep book nearby.
