Summary: hypnotic
Comment: This book is about a poor little rich girl who falls in love with an android. No, wait! Come on back. Silver Metal Lover is one of the best things Tanith Lee has ever written. Jane is rich and lives in what should be paradise but her friends are nuts and thanks to her super busy, competitive and secretly fearful mother, Jane doubts herself. Then she gets Silver. He's a machine programmed to please but somewhere along the way, he exceeds his programing and becomes more real and more loving than any human in Jane's life. Thanks to him, she finds out what love is, and who she really is. Powerful stuff.
Of course, love like this can't last and defy anyone--even if you don't like Sci-Fi or romance, not to be moved at the climax of this book. I first read Silver when I was 13 and it still entertains.

Summary: The apogee of Tanith Lee's writing career
Comment: I first read this book at the age of 16, the age our heroine Jane is in this story; it was almost eerie the way I identified with the character. Even after 16 years I still consider this my favorite book of all time. The story is beautifully written to the very last line. The characters of Jane and Silver are painted so realistically that you can believe this poingnant love story actually happened. This book also puts an emotional element into the sci-fi genre that is usually not there. Tanith Lee is my favorite author; many of her volumes are in my personal library, and I believe "The Silver Metal Lover" is the apogee of her writing career.

Summary: One of the best books I ever read
Comment: The Silver Metal Lover is absolutely one of my favorite books, right up there with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and 2001: A Space Odyssey. The touching Romeo/Juliet type story of a girl in love with a robot is absolutely breathtaking, from the poignant story to the lyrical language and wording that is Tanith Lee's style. This book made me laugh, and it is the only book ever to make me cry. Every time I read it, I find new phrases, ideas, and emotions in it, and every single time I shed shameless tears. If you ever get a chance to buy or read this book, please do. You won't regret it
