Summary: It is not nice to say bad things about Old Winter
Comment: Up here in the Northland country of Minnesota we are very fatalistic about our winters, which last pretty much from Halloween until Easter. Tell us that we have just enjoyed one of the warmest Decembers in history and we know that we had better expect a brutal January. Well, in this story written by Judith Benet Richardson and pictures by R. W. Alley, Old Winter is at the local supermarket trying to pick something out for diner before he heads South when he hears a couple of the locals complaining about how much they HATE winter. This offends Old Winter so much that instead of heading to South American to bring the change of the seasons there, he stomps off to his meat locker and falls asleep for two months.
While Old Winter sleeps, the townspeople have to suffer through the longest winter anyone had ever seen. Snow piled up to the very rooftops of all the houses. When Old Winter finally awakes he finds the town is practically frozen, covered in dirty snow and giant iciles. A quartet of Canadian Geese begs Old Winter to head South, but he refuses. Is there anyone who can convince Old Winter that it is time to go?
Even though the author is from Massachusetts and the artist is from Rhode Island, they do a nice job of capturing what a harsh winter is like, even if all they have to put with are those puny New England snowstorms. If your children think that Winter lasts too long, then let them read this book and teach them a valuable lesson. Things can always be worse! More importantly, they will also learn that no matter what happens, the seasons always turn.
