Summary: Excellent Survey
Comment: I am a teacher that frequently uses this text in World HIstory classes. This textbook is among the best as a balanced view of World History. Duiker and Spielvogel strive to overcome the western-centric bias of most of the world history textbooks available. (Including several by Spielvogel himself) The text is fact intensive, but is easily understandable and avoids unnecessarily flowery verbiage. THe text is straight and to the point. I believe the book does an excellent job of giving the reader a fair and comprehensive view of all of the World's History. Making sense of 10,000 plus years in 900 pages is a fair accomplishment.

Summary: Just hope that your class wont use this text........
Comment: I agree with the student from georgia. I am currently enrolled in this class, and thought I had an interest in history untill I started struggling through each monotonous chapter.
This book effectively serves to remove any interest and/or enjoyment from learning history. What especially bothers me is, this book starts out at chapter 14 (with the first 13 chapters comprising volume 1), and quite often, especially in the first few chapters, asks you to reference, for example, chapter 6, or some other chapter not even included in this textbook. My class (thankfully) said nothing in the syllabus or course materials requiring the purchase of the first book. However, how am i supposed to reference something i dont even own, and have no intention (or money) to purchase? I kept feeling more and more ripped off and cheated with each volume one reference that was made.

Comment: A warning to all who enjoy History, avoid this text!
I used this text for a World Civ. course this past spring of 2002 and my opinion is not a favorable one. I read and studied this book from its beginning to not-quite its end, and found its content to be poorly written and executed. Its droning use of vocabulary and facts, and its constant fluctuating between historical events and times will confuse ones interest in a matter of minutes, and History should not be a study in confusion. The addition of contradicting information throughout this text's chapters also contribute to the confusion of its readers, the obvious failure of its many contributors in correlating their facts, and poor editing. This book should be pulled from use and publication! It turns a complacent subject study into one of despair.
I rated this text two stars only because the chapters on WWII flowed and made sense:the best part of this book! I attribute this to the knowledgable individual (my assumption) who wrote these chapters.

A further note: I am a middle aged man who has returned to college to pursue a Masters in Psychology, President of a homeowners association, and a former businessman of a small manufacturing company. I am not a scholar of History, nor do I claim to be. In my review of this text book I found many discrepancies between its own content and between the lectures given by my professor who holds a Doctorate in History, I pointed these discrepancies out to my professor throughout the semester, and she complied. History is History, and one's research and opinions of the subject can be altered by one's own knowledge of, or lack of, the subject. This text destroyed my interest in learning History for the time being, maybe my review will save yours.
Thank you for your time in reading my review.
