Summary: Great political machinations!
Comment: I had to laugh when I read one of the reviews for this book. The writer called it boring and said if you liked Raymond Feist you would not like this book. I totally agree. I picked up Feist's books because of my absolute adoration of the Empire series. I was shocked. Feist's books are soooo poorly written and simply plotted. Where was all the wonderful political intrigue, suspense, and plot manipulation like that found in Daughter of the Empire? Feist's books read like outlines of "how to write a formulaic fantasy book." Granted, they are probably entertaining to teen-age boys or someone just getting into the fantasy genre, but the Empire series is definitely for a more intelligent, thoughtful reader. Together Wurts and Feist have created a wonderful new world and peopled it with interesting characters doing very interesting things. It is not about swords and sorcery, it is about a heroine who manipulates the restrictions and resources of her culture to survive. If you like a book that keeps you guessing, takes unexpected twists and turns, and challenges you to keep up, this is the book!

Summary: Fan-freakin'-tastic!
Comment: I actually picked this book up as a last resort, having nothing better to read at the time. Wow! What a pleasant surprise it was. I was intrigued from the very beginning with the society of the Tsurani and their political machinations. I was on the edge of my seat reading all three books, and they only kept getting better. Mara was a strong, intelligent and cool woman and each book left me feeling supremely satisfied with its climax.
I think these books are actually better than the Riftwar saga, set on Midkemia, which tended to get boring about 3 books in.
I read somewhere that reading the Empire series is like reading a novel from the Empire's point of view in the Star Wars saga. A pretty good analogy actually.
Incidentally, my husband and I enjoyed these books so much, we named our first-born daughter Mara!

Summary: Wonderful!
Comment: I have read all of Feist's books MANY times and this series is easily one of my favorites. After reading the Riftwar Saga series it was great to read these books to get a look at life on the other side of the Rift. The Tsurani culture is rife with politcal intrigue and bloody deeds and there is never a dull moment. The story's heroine, Lady Mara, is a refreshing switch from the usual and we see her grow from a shy unsure young girl to a strong intelligent player of the Great Game. The book will have you turning pages to see where the next asassins blade will come from and what ingeneous plan Mara will come up with to save the Acoma from obliteration. The entire series is worth reading again and again.
