Comment: Where the Red Fern Grows
By Wilson Rawls
September 19, 2002
This summer I read a really great book. I read the book called Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. This story takes place on a farm. The main character is Billy. He has two parents and a few sisters. Billy is kind-hearted and is very good at coon hunting. Billy wanted dogs really bad so he worked for 1 ½ years until he had enough money to get them. He finally got his dogs and started to teach them coon-hunting skills with the help of his sisters. When they were ready to go coon hunting, he took them mostly every night. The author's purpose for writing this book was to show that if you want something really bad, you have to work for it. Another purpose the author had for writing this book is that he set the setting of the book on where he used to live. I think Wilson Rawls wanted reader to think about what kind of life was back then when he lived.
Billy loved to coon hunt with his dogs every night. One-day Billy's grandfather told him that he entered Billy in a coon-hunting race. Billy was very excited. It took a long time to get to where the contest was being held, but they made it. Billy did really well. In the end Billy and his dogs won the coon-hunting race and took home a trophy and some cash. This event was important because it showed not to give up and that Billy and his dogs were the best coon-hunters around. Billy was one of my favorite characters because he was always brave no matter what happened. He loved his dogs with all his heart and continued to help them learn.
I liked this book because it was exciting to read. When you read one part of the book it makes you want to read more. Another reason I like this book is because it is really sad, and it makes you want to cry. In the beginning of the book, there are comparisons of now and then. The kind of reader that would like this book would need to like dogs and hear a story of a boy's life. This book is really important to read because it shows part of life and it meanings.

Summary: Another Great Book
Comment: Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls tells the story of a young boy named Billy growing up in the rural Ozark Mountains during the depression. Billy's family is poor but proud of the simple life they live. Billy's dream is to own a pair of coon hounds. His family does not have the money to buy Billy any hunting dogs. So Billy sets out to work and save enough money to buy the dogs himself. His Grandfather encourages him and even agrees to keep Billy's plan a secret from his parents. He works at all sorts of odd jobs and saves every penny he can get his hands on in an old tin can. By the end of the summer he has enough money to buy a pair of pups. He sees an advertisement in a magazine for quality coon hound pups and his grandfather helps him to order them. Billy has to walk to town when his dogs arrive. On the way home they have an encounter with a cougar. Billy names his pups Old Dan and Little Ann. He works hard to train them to hunt. Billy enters a hunting competition and after enduring a number of set backs he wins the gold cup. Through all of his adventures with Old Dan and Little Ann Billy learns many valuable lessons about life. The author, Wilson Rawls, brings to life the time and place of his story in Where the Red Fern Grows. I enjoy hunting and working with dogs in the field, so I was able to relate to Billy's love of his dogs and the land. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any reader.

Comment: I really enjoyed this book, even though it was a little repetitive at times. Some parts you could predict what would happen, but others were very interesting. My favorite part was when the boy finally got the dogs after saving all his money. It was sad that the dogs died at the end, but the ending was still good.
