Comment: Darby Landon has escaped her family's ritzy Washington D.C. background by running a horse ranch in Montana. But when her flighty sister, Pepper, calls from Brazil and asks for a favor, Darby relents and returns to Washington as an escort for a business associate of their father's. First, Darby needs to get cleaned up and refined so she can function as a part of the high society crowd without making a complete fool of herself. Pepper books her into a crash course at Glass Slipper, Inc., where she will shop, get waxed and get taught the finer points of being a polished woman.
At the airport, Darby meets the drop-dead gorgeous Shane Morgan, who has returned home to deal with the estate of his recently deceased grandmother, and to visit his godmothers who run Glass Slipper, Inc. Darby and Shane are instantly attracted, and are unable to keep their hands off each other. Over the next few days, their relationship intensifies...and then Darby meets Stefan Bjornsen. Stefan is definitely not the old codger she was expecting as a client of her father's. He's arrestingly handsome and infinitely charming. There is more than initially meets the eye in the men Darby meets, and she finds she must be very careful. Which of the two men will she fall for?
THE CINDERELLA RULES starts off as a fun, chick-lit type read. It's light and entertaining with a number of steamy love scenes that will warm you up in the cold weather. A few chapters in readers will find that this book has an interesting story brewing below the surface. Characters are not who they seem to be, which makes for some intriguing twists. Darby is fresh and natural, and the selfless act of putting her comfortable life aside to help her sister endears her to the reader right away. The reader can't help but root for the relationship between Shane and Darby to develop. The two make a comical yet sincere pairing, and the speed at which they get together doesn't feel forced even though it happens quickly.
What I truly enjoyed the most about THE CINDERELLA RULES was that the final two chapters took the book past the level of a typical romance novel. We get to see glimpses into the future with the story concluded and wrapped up completely. There is definitely room for some spin-off novels, there are a plethora of quirky and endearing characters just waiting for their stories to be told.
I highly recommend THE CINDERELLA RULES for an amusing read this winter. If you have enjoyed Donna Kauffman's previous novel, THE BIG BAD WOLF TELLS ALL, or even if she's a new discovery, you will not be disappointed in this charming tale of finding true love.
