Summary: Parker tries someone other than Spenser
Comment: Night Passage is Robert Parker's attempt to return to form after his Spenser character was beginning to look rather tired. He has introduced Jess Stone, who may or not be reintroduced in later novels. Stone has left California because of a drink problem. He is recruited to a rather odd town, ironically named Paradise. It is immediately clear that the town wants a malleable sherrif and that strange money-laundering activities are going on. Unfortunately for Paradise, Jesse Stone turns out to be no pushover. While trying to cope with his wrecked personal life, he digs deeper into the corrpuption of the town, which revolves mainly around the bank head, Hastings Hathaway. Unfortunately, nearly all the characters in Night Passage are stereotypes. Indeed, some are laughably so. My edition also has a very irritating font for the first line of each of the 75 chapters. It's that "pseudo-handwriting" font which inexperienced editors often use, but about which professional editors should know better. Notwithstanding this, the book is an easy read and is a definite improvement on Parker's recent Spenser attempts. Jesse Stone is a good charactr and will, I suspect, return. Oh, and there isn't any cooking in this book, thank god.

Summary: Parker Unveils a New Hero !
Comment: IN one of his boldest moves of late, Robert Parker introduces us to a new and highly likeable character in Chief Jesse Stone. Fresh from a dead-end job and a serious drinking problem in Los Angeles, Jesse Stone comes to a quaint little town known as Paradise to take over the responsibilities of police chief. Little does he realize what mayhem lurks just below the surface of this seemingly innocent little harbour town. In a plot full of strange characters and even stranger plot twists, Parker unravels another classic suspense mystery novel. If you like Spenser... you'll LOVE Stone!! Just like he handles the "seedy element" in Paradise, Jesse Stone will catch up to you one way or another by the end of the book. I highly recommend it to all Spenser fans that want to welcome Parker's newest hero with open arms ( and minds!).

Summary: A Good Introduction
Comment: It does look like this is a good time for Robert B. Parker to come up with a new character, and judging from this first book, Jesse Stone could be a winner. He's certainly different from Spenser. While he shows some wit, he's of a darker and brooding nature, having messed up his professional and personal lives by hitting the bottle too heavily. In fact, he even goes to a job interview after drinking and surprisingly gets hired as police chief in Paradise, Mass. He figures that he was hired in spite of his condition when the truth is he was hired because of his drinking...he appeared to be far easier managed than he turned out to be.

Obviously, Parker intends to have the two series interrelate to a degree. Vinnie Morris and Gino Fish appear in the story, although interestingly, they never interrelate with Stone. Somehow, I suspect that might change in future novels.

All in all, this is a promising beginning for a new Parker hero.
