Summary: It's All About View--Point of View
Comment: Once again, Russell and Holmes are at it again in this third delightful book by Laurie R. King, which is a delight to read. And that's it.

The charm has now been replaced with a deeper sense now, since they are married. It is a wonderful relationship, true, though rather unconventional. That's most likely why they enjoy it so much. You can't help but be pulled in by Russell's provoking and provocative thoughts, always either toying with someone else's mind or seriously thinking about one person or thing or another. It's really Ms. King's wonderful writing ability and the way she portrays Russell's thoughts in this limited-omniscient point of view that really catches your attention.

"A Letter of Mary" is a great book with a wonderful author and my favorite theologian/chemist/detective.

Summary: I highly recommend this book!
Comment: I thought this book was very enjoyable. I have read the first two, and am presently reading "The Moor". I like the romance between Holmes and Russell, even though it doesn't seem like Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. I understand why Mary calls him "Holmes" (who would want to call their husband "Sherlock"? It's a bit awkward.), but why can't he call her Mary? They ARE husband and wife! Also, their marriage is a little odd. They basically act the same as before, except for (to quote "The Moor") "certain activities rendered legal by a bit of paper". I have to admit I liked "A Monstrous Regiment of Women" a bit better, because it better romance between Holems and Russell, and it had a thicker plot. Although, if you want thick plots, nothing beats "The Beekeeper's Apprentice". All in all, this is a very delightful series to read. I just wish I knew who the real author of these books is. That's mystery I'd love to solve! We need the partnership of Holmes and Russell on this one! Also, I like how these books suggest that A. Conan Doyle was merely Watson's agent, that Holmes and Watson really lived. I think that is really neat.

Summary: King Runs Out of Narrative Steam
Comment: While I enjoyed the first two books as light reading, this third one puts an end to my reading of the Mary Russell series. The first two books proved entertaining despite various problems with characters and grating little errors, but the thin plot sinks this third book. The characters seem less developed and less interesting here, and most of the book is given over to false trails and irrelevant theological musings.

I have decided after finishing this third book to stick with Elizabeth Peters as my mystery writer of choice; her Amelia Peabody series does a lot more with the same time period and features stronger, more lively writing and characters. If you like academic period mysteries with female detectives, I suggest the Peabody books or Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen series instead.
