Summary: Sharp, well written and to the point
Comment: Cramming the three hundred years of the early modern period into as many pages is an unenviable task, but one that Koenigsberger carries off with flair and gusto. Neither a narrative nor an analysis nor a geographical breakdown this book succeds in holding the reader's attention while providing a comprehensive introduction to the period. Economic, social, political and religious factors seem to be presented in a depth far outstripping the actual length of the book, proof of its high achievment. He provides a smooth transition from the medieval to the ancien regime via the Reformation, a subject he dwells on at length (with justification). This book is of course nothing more than a brief introduction designed to whet the historical appetite, but manages to give significant insight into the themes and psychology of the period and one can only admire Koenigsberger for his depth and clarity. Although the layout of the book in endless sub divisions is somewhat disconcerting, it is invitingly approachable for the novice or the layman and even a handy synopsis for the historian. All he major countries, characters and events are addressed in what is without doubt a fundamental introductory work fulfilling the ultimate task of provoking both thought and further reading.
