Summary: A radical retelling of the story of Kauhuhu the Shark God
Comment: "The Shark God" is based on a traditional Hawaiian tale that begins a long, long time ago when a young brother and sister saved a shark that was entangled in lines and thrashing in the shallows. Proud of what they had done the children made the mistake of drumming out their triumph on the king's drum. You see, it was "kapu" (forbidden) for anyone by the king to touch that drum and even though they touched it as lightly as they could the king say and had his guards grab the children and orders them to die in three days. Their parents plead and protest but the king refuess to show mercy and the people of the island had all become as hard-hearted as their king. For their children's sake the parents go where no one had ever gone willingly before, into the cavern of Kauhuhu, the fearsome Shark God, to beseech him to save their children. However, Kahuhuhu is huge and terrible to behold, and he also looks hungry.
"The Shark Gdd" is retold by Rafe Martin who first became captivated by the tale when he first heard it as a boy. A shark lover, Martin was able to gather information about not only sharks but also the Hawaiian culture that saw these creatures as "aumakua" (familial totems). Artist David Shannon also visited the Bishop Museum on Oahu while researching the visual details of his pictures. Martin makes a series of changes in the tale, all of which are detailed in the Author's Note in the back of the book, and which transform the story of "The Shark God" into something more fit for consumption by young children. In many ways the end result is very much a new story, which certainly degrades the value of the story as reflecting Hawaiian culture. For the original check out "Kauhuhu, the Shark God of Molokai" in Westervelt's "Hawaiian Legends of Ghosts and Ghost-Gods."

Summary: David Shannon outdoes himself
Comment: David Shannon ("No David") channels the spirit of Gaugin in this book. You can hardly believe it's the same artist. The story is thematically challenging for the early reader (6+). The protagonists are asked to place their trust in a shark god, which is portrayed with a touch of quiet malevolence. Yet they are rewarded for their kindness and faith. A beautiful, haunting story.
