Summary: A character study of George Washington for younger readers
Comment: In "George Washington: A Picture Book Biography," James Cross Giblin presents the Father of Our Country as a man who left behind no children of his own, but instead left a nation to which he dedicated his life. With full-page oil paintings by Michael Dooling, Giblin covers the basic biographical details of Washington's life, from what it was like growing up on Mount Vernon, to his military service, his time as president, and his final years back home. The portrait is of Washington as a solemn and often solitary man.

However, in the back of this oversized book young readers will find even more biographical details about Washington. There is a map of the United States in 1797, a list of Important Dates in George Washington's Life, the story of George and the Cherry Tree (including its origin), some of George Washington's Rule of Good Behavior, a list of Monuments to George Washington, and information about Mount Vernon. Consequently you really end up getting two books in one. Giblin devotes more text to the sections in the back than he does to the main part of the book. The result is that this is slightly more than an introductory juvenile biography that emphasizes Washington's character more than his the events in his life.

Summary: a good book
Comment: I thought this book would be very helpful in a lesson plan teaching about the Revolutionary War in addition about teaching elementary school students about George Washington. It was interesting for a 5th grader and had excellent pictures. It was worth the money and was a good introduction to George Washington.

Summary: Wonderful Story and Stunning Illustrations...
Comment: Out of all the books we have read in honor of President's Day, this one stands head and shoulders above the pack. The story is superbly written and the illustrations by Michael Dooling are gorgeous. Giblin weaves from facts a story that is entertaining and educational. His writing personalizes the life of George Washington without getting too mushy for adults or too bogged down in language that children don't understand. He even debunks the myth of the cherry tree in a separate section entitled "More about George Washington". I originally borrowed this book from the library but purchased it here on Amazon to add to our personal collection. It's THAT good!

Enjoy,
Cris
