Summary: Nice and Precise
Comment: I gave this book 5 stars because that is what I truly believe it deserves. Slam is one of those books that once you start reading, you don't want to put it down until you finish the last word of the final chapter.
The story of Greg "Slam" Harris will capture the hearts of many basketball fans and as well as anyone who likes to read. Living in Harlem, having a struggling family, problems at school, friends going down the wrong path were the troubles Greg went through. But once he stepped out on the court, everything was perfect.
The detailed story telling of Walter Dean Myers is "nice and precise." Every dribble of the ball, every jump-shot taken and every emotion is described in this book. It is as if you are right on the court with Greg. There is also this one part of the story when Greg is trying to figure out a math problem. Walter describes that sequence so well that it even taught me how to solve the problem. The pinacle of the book is when Greg's team plays against his best friend(Ice) and his team. They are the two best players in the city, with the two best teams. They go at it until the last buzzer sounds and only one will be champion. Who will it be???
All in all, this is one of the most entertaining books I have ever read. It will inspire those who need an up-lifting in life. Read it!

Summary: All About Ball
Comment: A Review by Amanda

This book was about a teenage boy who loved to play basketball. His nickname is Slam. When Slam transfers too a new school, he tries out for their basketball team. Him and another guy, Nick, were the best ones out there. He made the team, but then he started having problems with his coaches, schoolwork, home life, and teammates. Slam never started in a game, and he knew that he was the best one. This was his problem. His teammates always told him that he had an attitude problem and that's why he never got to start, and Slam didn't like being told this. He only got out in when the team was losing, and he could bring them back for a win.

Three things that I enjoyed about this book is that young adults can easily relate to Slam. Anyone who loves to play basketball, but who are having trouble in school or anything else, are just like Slam. I liked the realism because it talked about one of Slam's friend, Ice, was drug dealing. This book doesn't hide the fact that there are drugs out in the world. One more thing that I liked about this novel was the attitude this book brought alive. In the book, Slam wouldn't give up playing ball even though he didn't start. It just made him work harder to get a starting spot on the team.

I recommend this book to anyone likes realistic books and sports. This is a great book for teenagers especially because they can relate to it more than others.

Summary: Slam
Comment: Slam, by Walter Dean Myers was a interesting book. It was about 17-year-old Greg Harris from Harlem, New York. This is a ideal book for African American kids because it deals with the everyday struggles they have to go through. Greg is a basketball player and his friends call him Slam! because of the way he slams the ball into the hoop. But the book is not all about basketball. Greg has to find out if his friend is doing dangerous things behind his back that could be life threatening. Along with that he still has school that he isn't doing well in and a girl friend on the side named Mtisha. While Slam is dealing with all his struggles on the side he plays basketball to relive stress. The stress from all the things he is going through like school, his grandmother being sick, his little brother Derrick being a pain, his best friend Ice being in trouble, basketball, and a girlfriend. He still has time for Basketball. I recommend this book for African American teenagers around the world.
