Summary: Wondeful classic - but is Sara too good to be true?
Comment: "A Little Princess" is perhaps the only book I have read which determedly sticks to its title. Motherless Sara Crewe is sent from India to school at Miss Minchin's in Victorian England. Her father was tremendously rich, and Sara is treated accordingly - as a little princess. Her classmates nickname her Princess Sara, some in affection and some in scorn, but in this space of about four years, Sara befriends a poor, overworked little scullery maid about the same age as herself, Ermengarde, a rather fat, awkward little girl without many friends, and a very small girl called Lottie who has lost her mother. Then her father dies and his wealth disappears, and Sara must learn to cope with being demoted from show-pupil to scullery drudge. but Sara carries with her a loving heart and a quick imagination, and through this continues to hold herself as a princess would. Her princess status is eventually reinstated, with the discovery of her late father's best friend, who has been holding Captain Crewe's fortune for him and just looking for Sara.

The book is of course a truly wonderful classic, highlighting severe social concerns around the Victorian era, but the only problem I have ever had with it is Sara's sheer perfection. Modern children may feel at times as if they are being preached at. It is however, a book that both children and adults can read again and again to share Sara's fortune, her joys and her love.

Summary: If you loved A Secret Garden, you'll love A Little Princess.
Comment: Sara Crewe's life has changed from being very wealthy and being the most popular student at her school, to rags and extreme poverty in a matter of seconds. She is heartbroken when Miss Minchin, the seminary's head mistress, throws her into a cold, dirty attic room after learning her father is dead. Besides the other servant girl, Becky, who lives in the room next door, Sara has no one to comfort her. However, her spirit brightens up again when an unknown friend gives unexpected suprises.

Little by little, Sara's angel presents her with foreign gifts. Several of Sara's jealous peers begin to suspect things. She is suddenly happier and isn't afraid to show it either. She knows if she believes in herself and keeps the warm-loving heart she has inside, she'll be a princess forever. Will she have to learn to be happy in the attic? Or will things get better for her? Francis Hodgson Burnett is a classic writer. She makes her books full of adventure and suspense, that doesn't allow you to put the book down. I loved A Little Princess, and I'm sure you will too!

Summary: Amazing Beautiful Astounding
Comment: Let's just say it right now: This is one of the best children's movies ever made. It didn't do well at the box office, but that has nothing to do with its quality, which is spectacular.

Sara is a rich girl who lives in India with her father. Her mother was dead. As her father is called to Europe for World War One, Sara is sent to a prestigious boarding school in New York City. She quickly becomes a favorite among the students, who love her mystical tales. One person, the headmistress Miss Minchin, is not as pleased with Sara's imaginative stories. When news comes that her father died in war, Miss Minchin takes everything of Sara's and makes her a servant in the school. She befriends Becky, the other servant, and it's her imagination that keeps her going.

This movie has many beautiful moments. When Sara recieves the news of her father's death, the look on her face is devestating. When she is in trouble for having the other girls in her attic room, she confronts Miss Minchin, and hits a nerve when she asks about Miss Minchin's father. After Sara is locked away, Miss Minchin wipes away a tear, and we see that her father never loved her. It's nice that a villain has more than one layer for a change. When Sara dances in the snow, I think that's one of the most beautiful moments in the movie. And finally, when her father gets his memory back and they hug in the rain. That amazing scene pretty much tells you what the movie is about. It's about imagination, love, and never stopping believing that magical things can happen. This is a movie every family should have. In a word: Perfect.
