Summary: Christian Readers Beware
Comment: I bought this book because it had the same title as a book I read in high school. This was not the same book and it is NOT a Christian title. The main characters make fun of the (Catholic) church and that is pretty much it; I should have known by the thumbnail of the cover. But I reluctantly give three stars because the story moves along quickly. Overall, too dark and depressing for my tastes.

Summary: dark humor with tragic undertones, good plot
Comment: This book should not be judged by its cover which is somewhat lousy. But inside its covers is a compelling plot-- the events unfold with a sense of the inevitable but not the predictable. I liked its dark sense of humor. And I was moved by the central friendship between the protagonist and his friend from his life before college and med school.
The descriptions of New Orleans and the med school cadaver lab are quite good. And I liked the supporting cast of characters (Just don't look for strong female characters:-)). Well, except for the gun-toting strippers.
The main protagonist really gets himself into some situations-- there is real horror in this book. And it's not always easy to pity him for what he does although he pays dearly. But you definitely root for him as he uncovers a savvy sense of the feral one doesn't normally develop in higher education.
The book seems an unusual mix, of a sad sweetness, of a laconic kind of humor, and of violence-- guns and funeral parlors and corrupt cops.

Summary: MFA WRITES PRE-ADOLESCENT FANTASY
Comment: Missoula MFA alumnus has published a pre-adolescent fantasy at age 30... Okay, okay, I'm the author. I just got tired of not seeing any reviews here.
Here's the story of a medical student who can't get a date, worries about acne, gets wistful about comic books, and thinks guns work like they do in an action movie. The only sexualized women in the novel are physically threatening. I defend it as a cautionary tale about the perils of youth unlived. Not as some disturbing comment about me.
