Summary: It was engaging and entertaining
Comment: I thoroughly enjoyed Firefightin' Sam by Michael J. Hughes. It was engaging and entertaining. I think Hughes did a wonderful job of portraying the dilemmas kids face when their friends put them in questionable situations. As I read the scene when Sam is deciding whether or not to pull the fire alarm and his friends are calling him a chicken and clucking around him, I was unwillingly thrust back onto the playground during my elementary years. Hughes painted a perfect picture of the peer pressure kids face and the decisions, good or bad, which follow.
I was equally as impressed with the way in which Hughes handled the punishments given to Sam. I liked the creativity coupled with the educational aspect. He was given work detail at the school and a daily work routine at the firehouse.
The descriptions of the activities in the firehouse are incredibly interesting. I found myself taking time to read the charts and figuring out the questions the chief was asking Sam. I think kids will love this portion of book because of the insiders' look you get of a firefighter's life. I would highly recommend this book.
