Summary: Excellent course, but bring along your ambition and effort!
Comment: If you don't mind me writing a review after completing only the first ten of the course's forty chapters, I have to say that this is the book that turned me from a dabbler in Japanese into an actual student. Each chapter systematically covers various aspects of the language (vocabulary, sentence construction, nouns, verbs, connectors, etc.) in an orderly fashion. Even after the first 2-3 chapters you probably will be able to write a short story in Japanese, albeit with strict parameters that lessen as you move further into the book.

Nonewithstanding what's in the book, the key becomes what is in the student? Prepare to do the dirty work of making up your own homework assignments and really putting a lot of effort into the task at hand, including re-reading each chapter countless times. I found that by making summary notes on the most important concepts of each chapter, and by typing up English-to-Japanese (and vice-versa) vocabulary homework lessons, then xeroxing and working on them every few days, that I was retaining what I read much better. You basically become the teacher and the student...except when playing the CDs, which do a great, concise job of covering what is in each chapter.

Summary: Excellent refresher course
Comment: Excellent for someone who had already studied Japanese in the past but want to get a quick review. The "On the go" CDs are particulary well executed, with bilingual instructions such that the student doesn't have to be looking at the manual when listening to the CDs. They are excellent for those who want to take advantage of their commute time to learn the language. My main complaint is that it doesn't offer quite enough drills. And for that reason, a true beginner should probably use the book only as a complement to other more traditional text book/audio sets like the "Learn Japanese" series by Young and Nakajima.

Summary: This is the way to go!
Comment: I have to admit I've tried to learn Japanese before - an adult ed class that was painful, a girlfriend who isn't a girlfriend any more (NEVER try that!), some awful books, and I think I might remember a semester in college. Or maybe it was French. I don't know. But after all of that I still couldn't even sing along to Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto. This course was a last ditch effort. It's really great - it's simple but doesn't leave anything out, it explains things in a way that even I understand, and there are two really great sets of recordings, one for the book and one that reviews. (I listen to it while I jog.) The best thing is that I actually had a conversation (okay, it was simple, but it was still a conversation) the other day with a friend from Kyoto. Unbelievable. Next is the advanced level. Even you would be impressed, Yumiko!
