Summary: A Meteoric Beach Read
Comment: Douglas Preston and Lincoln Childs have been magnificent, edge-of-the chair storytellers from their very first collaboration, Reliquary. But their writing skills have been honed in every subsequent novel, giving their characters greater substance and sharpening their plots. If this story seems familiar, it is. Its key elements are variants of a somewhat standard storyline for these writers: Another rich eccentric teams up with some Indiana Jones-type scientists and engineers and everyone sees again that money can't buy everything, Mother Nature can be nasty, some mysteries loom beyond today's knowledge, and pushing the scientific relm might be risky. You'll know the major characters in here: Same people, same conflicts as in the earlier P&C books wearing different names. But why tamper with success? The formula works. This is another book that will keep you turning pages long past your bedtime. As in Thunderhead and their others, Preston calls on his background at New York's American Museum of Natural History to provide some scientific underpinning to this tale -- enough so you may even collect a little stray knowledge of meteorites and supertankers. Take it to the beach or a summer hammock. No Pulitzers here; no National Book Awards. But thrilling fun!

Summary: Formulaic, but a tried and true formula
Comment: At this point, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have refined their formula for writing bestsellers: (1) an sometimes eccentric, usually obsessive person (2) wants to achieve some goal (3) which requires that a team of highly skilled professionals (4) equipped with super high-tech toys (5) and brimming with (over)confidence (6) go into the wild and face Mother Nature, one another, and Big Science, (7) and although every contingency should be planned for, (8) things go wrong.

"Mount Dragon" was about microbiologists dealing with a killer virus, "Riptide" was about treasure hunters, "Thunderhead" was about archeaologists, and "The Ice Limit" is about engineers and a geologist on a meteor hunting expedition.

Preston and Child actually care enough about the characters to imbue them with more characterization than usual for thrillers, although the breakdown in one of the central characters isn't hard to predict. There's some science of meteorites, a naval skirmish, something of a love affair, and a lot about engineering. The gore level is relatively low, although there are a number of deaths. Like "Riptide," there is a mystery buried within the adventure story, and the reader is kept guessing to the last page.

Among their books, I would rate "The Ice Limit" on a par with "Riptide," just below "Mount Dragon," and above "Thunderhead" and "Reliquary."

Summary: Couldn't Put It Down
Comment: The Ice Limit is on my ten best list. I was reading this book late into the night knowing I'd struggle to get up the next morning. I would say, "Okay, one more chapter." But, before I knew it, it was three more.

I've read a handful of books by Preston and Child. Although I like them all, The Ice Limit is my favorite. It's packed with adventure, and I mean packed. The characters are great. The authors' description of the characters made me grow attached to them. And for as many characters as were in the book, this was quite a feat.

The premise itself was fascinating. I'm a sucker for plots dealing with the unknown. In this case, the unknown is a meteor. The bulk of the book involves the efforts to extract the meteor from the ice and return it to Palmer Lloyd's museum. Needless to say, this is not a simple process. Beyond the environmental issues, the characters had to deal with sabotage, a mad Chilean (?) navy captain, and the meteor's strange properties.

The climax of the novel left me breathless, and the ending left me wanting more. The last final twist got me; I did not foresee it.

If you're looking for a fast read with lots of adventure and an intelligent plot, pick up The Ice Limit and settle in for a wild ride.
