Summary: Another good story to facilitate discussion....
Comment: This book is an unusually illustrated story about four diverse families finding their way to China and their Chinese daughters. Of course, I did cry when I read it to my four year old Lucy (d.o.a. 10/98, Jiangsu Province), but Lucy already knows from our many previous readings on the subject that I am crying because I am happy! My daughter and I have discussed most adoption issues very candidly and she has done a fabulous job processing her "history". I did object to the book's rather frequent use the word "orphanage", which I assiduously avoid at home because of its very negative connotation in this country. The book also makes reference to some silver bracelets with bells which none of my friends or I had ever heard of, or bought, while in China. All in all, though, another good story to help the past seem real to the girls, and to help them find their own stories.

Summary: By parents, teachers, or care-givers
Comment: Charmingly written by the team of Jean Davies Okimoto, and Meilo So, The White Swan Express: A Story About Adoption is a simple yet heartwarming picture book about four baby girls in China, each of whom will make a family in four different homes very happy. Simplified color illustrations by Elaine M. Aoki wonderfully enhances the authors' easygoing prose narrative making The White Swan Express an unusually fine picture book experience for young readers, as well as an excellent read-aloud story to precede or enhance a serious discussion about the issues of adoption by parents, teachers, or care-givers.

Summary: An Funny Story on Adoption
