Summary: A very useful and timely collection
Comment: Bernasconi (Univ. of Memphis) has here assembled and edited an important text, contributing greatly to the discussions among Continental philosophers, both here and abroad, on the persisting problems of race and racism.
There are two key aspects of this volume that I'd like to highlight here:
1. The collection features a strong combination of established and classically-received scholars (Kant, DuBois, Nardal, Senghor, Sartre, Fanon) and many big-name contemporary scholars, such as Judith Butler, Linda Martin Alcoff, and Robert Gooding-Williams.
2. Bernasconi's inclusion of an updated translation of chapter five of Fanon's monumental existential-phenomenology of racialized experience, BLACK SKIN/WHITE MASKS (1952), "The Lived Experience of the Black" (correcting Charles Lam Markmann's mistranslation, "The Fact of Blackness"). This chapter is absolutely central for any and all critical explorations of race and racialized conscisousness.
Bernasconi's recent turn toward Continentalist perspectives on race and racism is not without controversy; however, even his critics would agree that the texts assembled in this volume are very important for the student and scholar alike.
Rating: 2
Summary: Exegetical excess
Comment: Mr. Bernasconi, in a far flung attempt to trace the problem of twentieth century racism to certain nineteenth century theological positions, has taken highly selective and controversial studies done in that century, in what appears to be a backhanded attempt under the guise of objective scholarly inquiry to paint with a broad brush the entire religious community of that era with a simplistic and in many cases unfair portrayal. He has unfortunately overreached himself in this endeavor, taking on a task fit for a more philosphically objective personality.
