Summary: It changed my whole outlook on sleep
Comment: As far as good health goes, there are numerous books on eating right and exercising but if sleep is so important why is it a relatively neglected topic? This book has convinced me that a good night's sleep is just as important as a good diet and exercise to proper health. This is one of the few books I've read that has really stuck with me. Before reading this book I saw sleep as an inconvience and I tried to get by on as little as possible but after reading this book- I realized just how important it is to get a good night's sleep. I have now learned that doing thing such as seeing how long you can deprive yourself of sleep are just plain foolish. The part about driving really hit home. The author mentions several times that if you ever start feeling tired while driving- pull over and rest! It may sound like simple common sense but so many of us do not follow this. I remember one time when I was driving late at night and I was really tired but I didn't want to pay for a motel room so I drove home. I remember being worried that I was going to fall asleep at the wheel. Because of this book I will never make this same mistake again! This book is very thourough and informative on sleep disorders and even though I heard of many of them already, I learned alot of new information. I knew sleep apnea could be potentially life threatning but I didn't know it was so widespread- afflicting as many as 20 percent!
The main reason why I only give the book four stars instead of five is due to its lack of conciseness. The book could have been half as long and it still would have been just as helpful. Some statements are just being repeated over and over and should have been edited out. However the repetition isn't necessarily all bad. The author mentioned many times about not driving when you feel tired. Things like that should be repeated several times for emphasis. Driving while tired could put your life at stake!
Occassionally the author appears inflexible in his sleep attitudes and some of the things he pushes us to do are not very realistic and likely to be followed by that many people. The author mentions how he has turned down invitations to several parties late at night just so he could go to bed at his usual 9:00 time and not be thrown off his schedule. Yes we should strive to be in tune with our biological clocks but sometimes you have to make exceptions for special occasions.

Summary: Lifesaving, Groundbreaking, Readable...buy it!
Comment: Yes, it's too long; and the lack of an index is frustrating. But Dement presents ideas here that need to be heard, and haven't before. Sleep is not a simple process that can be distilled into a soundbyte - and his scientist's training won't let him devolve this into a mere list of "tips to sleep better". So, it it worth wading through 450 pages? A resounding yes. My own sleep problems were helped the very night I skipped ahead to the sleep hygeine chapter (the closest things to tips in the book). My understanding of jetlag and "prime time" for creative work will help me in the future. My respect for sleep has grown and will change my decisions. My realization of how close I have been to falling asleep at the wheel is terrifyingly clear. I am sending the book to one friend who I am sure suffers from a life threatening sleep lack. And unlike the reader who found Dement's career history self serving, I hear instead a plea for more research on this vitally important subject. Fascinating, readable, likeable, surprising, and worth every minute of your time to read. Although the writer's style is easy and readable, it alone would not rate five stars. But the content is five star plus. Buy it!

Summary: There are lessons for everyone
Comment: I picked up this book at the Stanford bookstore because I suspected my daughter and my husband may be suffering from a sleeping disorder. After reading the book, I found out that I may have one too! Dr. Dement destroys many of the myths surrounding sleep including the myth that sleeping pills are bad. I was particularly struck by the dangers of driving drowsy, something I do quite often as a consultant who travels to clients. I now know there are actions that I can take to minimize the risk, including scheduling meeting times more in tune with the low energy points during the day. The book is written in a style that is clear, concise, and easy to read. Though I do not think all his recommendations are necessarily practical, you can pick and choose those that will work for you. I highly recommend this book for everyone, but particularly if someone in your family is having trouble sleeping.
