Summary: A pleasant return to the adventures of Miles Vorkosigan.
Comment: For those of us who enjoy fun, well told stories, a new book by Lois M. Bujold is always a treat. This latest installment in the Miles Vorkosigan saga is no exception. Komarr begins shortly after our hero is confirmed in his new position, the one he recieved at the end of Memories. On this trip, Miles is just along for the ride. There doesn't even appear to be a problem for him to solve. Until, that is, strange occurrences bring politics into the equation. For the Butcher's son, politics and Komarr are a deadly mixture. Ms. Bujold reveals the layers of intrigue involved in this story with her usual skill and humor. Komarr is not as good a book as Memories, which, besides being a good story, was a defining moment for the whole series. It is, however, a very pleasant read, a happy afternoon with old friends. It also positions our protagonist perfectly for his next grand adventure. (Your welcome, Ms. Bujold)
Rating: 5
Summary: Bujold creates a believable woman to match Miles.
Comment: One of Bujold's strengths is her ability to show the consistency of human personalities even in an uncertain, hypothetical future. In "Komarr," she takes a woman caught in an abusive marriage and shows her development into an independent, if wounded, individual. Those readers who think Ekaterine weak are wrong, wrong, wrong. She simply, through no fault of her own, has been caught in a destructive relationship. Admittedly the book focuses less on Miles himself than on Ekaterine and her growing emotional attraction to Miles. But Bujold and Miles both know that Ekaterine must meet challenges and grow on her own in order to find herself. The pace, the plot, are different from prior Vorkosigan books, but in order to remain fresh, the series also must change and grow.
Rating: 4
Summary: More Space Soap Than Space Opera
Comment: I enjoyed reading this book. But, I can see the writing on the wall. It looks like from now on Bujold is going to focus more on Mile's romance and personal activities instead of on an Action and Adventure type of plot. The Romance is well written, but I'd rather it took up 10% of the book instead of the 90% it did here. It looks like "Mirror Dance" was the last "true" Vorkosigan book, with "Memory" serving as the transition, and "Komarr" as the first of the new style. A shame, really. But, still good.
