Summary: Excellent for the specifics.
Comment: Simon and Schuster's Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians is one of the most beautifully photographed guides on the market, but also one of the most specific. There are not as many species of newts, salamanders, or snakes mentioned, as in the Peterson Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians. Though Simon and Schuster's pales in comparison, it is a solid contribution to field identification. This book contains the species you are most likely to see, as Peterson's contains rarer and uncommon species.
There are two editions of this guide, and one is newly updated. I own the decade old edition of this, and this is probably why it is so specific. Buy the new edition, of course, since it is likely that there are more species added to the original print.

Summary: A very good deal...
Comment: When I received this book, I was a little skeptical, but it turned out to be very useful and informative. Pocket-sized yet loaded with information, it's a great reference to bring to a reptile house at the zoo or a herp expo. It serves as a good identification tool for some of the more common species of reptiles and amphibians one is likely to encounter in the wild and in captivity. High quality photos are provided for each species and key field marks are described in good detail. On the whole, however, it is only useful in terms of identification down to genus level. Although this book does not cover husbandry, it gives enough details about habitat, diet, and breeding habits to serve as a starting point for information regarding the needs of different taxa in captivity. In addition, a basic introduction to the physiology and evolution of reptiles and amphibians is also included in this handy guide.
All in all, this book makes a great gift for a herpetologist or herpetoculturist. A must have for any reptile enthusiast's library.

Summary: Simon & Schusters Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians:review
Comment: For general information and a quality photo of each animal, this is a very hard book to beat. The book contains information on the most popular species kept as pets throughout the world. I have found it usefull in indentification of several species of turtles and lizards. I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing a quick reference for identification, general habitat and basic requirements of a large selection of reptiles and amphibians. This book gets an A+ on my list.
