Summary: Very nearly as good as it gets
Comment: I LIKE David Weber's writing. After I found my first Honor Harrington, I couldn't rest till I had the whole series. And I've read 3 or 4 of his other books.

But this book is really special. Weber brings three distinctive personalities: Alicia, a very special warrior; Tisiphane, one of the three furies; and a very advanced AI. All three inhabit the same body although the AI also inhabits their star ship.

There is breathtaking suspense as our protaginist(s) track down some particularly evil pirates, solving the mystery of who they are, where they come from and what their ultimate purpose is. Aided and impeded by her own military, she uses the arcane talents of all her selves to accomplish her goals.

But more important than the space opera aspects (and Weber sets up some of the best tactics and strategy in space warfare you'll find), the development of the conjoined leading character is fascinating. For both adventure and character development, this is a don't miss book.

Summary: Surprisingly Good
Comment: PATH OF THE FURY is the first David Weber book I've read. With over 35 years of scifi behind me, I still enjoy a rousing "spaceopera" This one was highly rated by readers and amazon kept recommending it, so I decided to give it a try. By the time it arrived, though, I was having second thoughts. The hype-laden cover, complete with flaming letters, didn't help, but after letting it languish on my shelf for a couple of years, I figured it was time to get on with with it. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be pretty good.

Don't get me wrong. PATH OF THE FURY doesn't quite rank among my all-time scifi favorites. Nor can I find it within myself to give this kind of book a five star rating. Nevertheless, it has an engaging story line and the main characters have more depth than you usually get in books in this genre. And, as you would expect, there's lots of action. It's definitely not dull.

I thought the idea of bringing an ancient Greek demi-goddess into the story was a bit over the top. I took this to be scifi, not fantasy. I can accept a lot as far as future technology, alien lifeforms and new worlds go. After all, nobody knows what the future (or the universe), holds. But mythological entities from the past don't fall within that realm as far as I'm concerned. Still, it works tolerably well within the context of this tale, so this is a minor issue.

I liked this book. It was well-plotted, there was lots of action, and the main character, though something of a super-woman (not to mention the assistance of the demi-goddess), was conflicted and sympathetic. If you like good "spaceopera", PATH OF THE FURY fills the bill.

Summary: A Tale of Justice/Revenge
Comment: Path of the Fury is the first independent novel by the author. In this novel, "pirates" are raiding Imperial planets; not very important planets, but still belonging to the Empire. After hitting two other planets, they make the mistake of raiding Mathison's World. One group massacres the occupants of a homestead and are looting when the owner comes home. Former-Captain Alicia DeVries of the Imperial Cadre kills every one of the raiding party, but not before they have inflicted some grievous wounds.

When the Imperial rescuers arrive, they fail to detect Alicia's body on three separate SAR overflights, but she is fully visible when a search team touches down at the homestead. The Imperials are confused, and not a little worried, by her survival and apparent invisibility. After the initial surgery to repair her wounds, Alicia is turned over to a Cadre medico, Tannis, an old friend and fellow survivor of Shallingsport.

When Alicia returns to consciousness, she finds herself possessed by an ancient Greek daimon, the Fury Tisiphone. After ruling out insanity as a possible answer, she comes to terms with the old and reduced spirit of revenge and begins planning how they will track down the people who ordered her family to be murdered. In the meantime, Alicia conspires to convince the medics of her madness.

When Alicia is brought to Soissons, the Sector Capital, for treatment, they see for the first time the alpha synth warship that would figure in their justice/revenge. Such ships have a crew of one, a neurally linked pilot who is part of a merge with the ship's AI. Tisiphone starts wandering around the planetary computer networks and making plans.

This novel begins with a fantastic premise, the existence of an ancient demonic spirit which has survived for thousands of years. The author doesn't explain this anomaly, but just makes it the basis of the plot. Once they have hijacked the alpha synth ship and Alicia's persona has been impressed on the newborn AI, the new Furies are created and are looking for justice/revenge.

By the way, this novel reads like a wish-fulfillment fantasy of a junior officer who has encountered some insufferable seniors. The writing, however, makes it all interesting, if not believable, and well worth a few hours of suspending disbelief.

Highly recommended for Weber fans and anyone else who enjoys future war SF with justice/revenge overtones.
