Summary: Overall good, but lacking in some areas
Comment: OK, I'm on hour 6 and this is what I have to say. Overall, the book has done well for me. I am a first-time Linux (never UNIX) user and have seen good stuff come from SAMS books. So I figure this one will do well. I agree with the others saying that the installation section is pretty weak, but after the "learning experience" of trial and error, i was able to get it down pretty well. From there, the only complaint I have is that he does not make it easily known to the absolute beginner how to read the HOWTOs or other docs. For example, if I wanted to read a doc on XFree86, I had NO idea how to open a text editor, etc., to check it out. At first, I had no idea what emac was and didn't bother with it in installation. Only after reading a ways in did I realize that it would be almost essential! It would have been nice if he had made that clear in a side note or something. A big bonus for me, though, was that they included the RedHat 5 CD. BIG money/time! saver there!

Summary: Good if your installation doesn't run into problems
Comment: I used the cd to install Red Hat 5.0 and followed the step by step instructions in the book. I now have Linux up and running on a dual boot machine with no problems. The installation was straight forward, but I feel that had problems occured the book wouldn't have had enough detail to help me overcome them. An easy to read book that doesn't go into any real depth, but can get a new user up and running relatively quickly.
