Summary: Great book but in URGENT need of a more current update
Comment: Art and Craft... is a little book on teaching with some great ideas. Although most of the essays still provide useful, insightful, and very practical advice for college instructors, both new and experienced, some chapters have aged rather badly -- it's a shame that Harvard UP has simply been reprinting the same edition without substantial changes for the last 20 years! Much in higher education has changed since this book first appeared in 1982. While the chapters on varieties of teaching, the first day of class, rhythms of the semester, or questioning still read well, many sound hopelessly out of date. Especially Heather Dubrow's essay on college writing reads like it was written sometime during the late nineteenth century. Today's academic writing has moved miles away from where it was in 1982, and, from today's perspective, the chapter offers little more than very basic advice, and even this, on the very conservative side. Despite the inclusion of a useful index at the end, the book does not include even the most rudimentary bibliography, a big minus for those who would like to read more, especially since some interesting quotes from other sources, whlie credited by author's name, are not properly documented with source information, and hence impossible to locate. There is no doubt that this book could once be accurately described as outstanding, but that was almost 20 years ago, and it's definitely time for an update. Otherwise, this once excellent book runs a serious risk of quickly becoming obsolete and largely irrelevant to contemporary teaching practice.

Summary: Good handbook for TAs
Comment: I recommend that professors work through this book with Teaching Assistants--e.g. meet every other week over lunch to discuss a chapter or two. There is indeed an 'art' of teaching, and it's foolish and inefficient to expect each generation of university teachers to learn it all over again.

Summary: They use it at Harvard!
Comment: The Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning at Harvard University calls this "a collection of essays covering topics such as: preparing for the first day of class, lecturing, holding discussions, questioning, leading sections, teaching essay writing, grading and evaluating, and using the rhythms of the semester." As a recommended handbook for instructors at Harvard, it is surely more than a safe bet!
