Summary: Superficial revisionist history, 1990s style
Comment: 'The American Century' has been about the house for about a month, now. It is the quintessential 'coffee-table book'. For one thing, it is almost as large as the coffee table; for another, it is profusely illustrated, and contains no article longer than a page and a half. With so much material to draw upon, one might expect some depth somewhere; all that meets the eye are leftist polemics. The author, alas, commits the cardinal sin of the revisionist historian - he lets his prejudices get in the way of his reporting. He judges the events and people of the past hundred and twenty years by the standards of a modern ultraliberal, and is forever tut-tutting and waving his finger at the appalling lack of Social Conscience that prevailed until a week ago last Tuesday. He even has the gall to fling bricks at Paul Johnson, who is a better historian accidentally than most are on purpose. Well, everyone to his own taste, as the old woman said when she kissed the pig. If you want a big picture book to leaf through on dull evenings, 'The American Century' may be just the thing. If you want unbiased history, with some details in it that you never heard before, leave it alone.

Summary: A Fantastic Resource
Comment: This book truly surprised me. I expected a "coffee table" book full of pictures with not much content. What I found instead, are recounts of our history often buried. History that was-and still is- embarrassing for us. Harold Evans has done his research not by reading about history, but by traveling the country talking with and even living with the people that are the product of our actions throughout this century. I commend him. He has opened our eyes to many truths, like them or not.

Summary: A popular conventional history
Comment: I listened to all books of the series. I found that it was enjoyable to listen to, quite lively and it helped me in filling some gap in my knowledge of history. As such I would recommend it.
Having said that I found that overall it is a popular history book of little scholarly value and as many such books it has strong patriotic, ethnocentric and us-centric overtones.
if you are looking for an easy to listen to history of the period, especially if you are not very knowledgeable about it, this is a good book for you.
