Summary: Yes, this really IS a science fiction masterpiece!
Comment: Despite the recommendations of Bookmatcher and the numerous "10" reviews readers gave this book, I was still skeptical, and took my time getting around to reading it. I expected a quaint, boring "marooned spaceman" story laced with outdated 50's-style future technology that would be hard to finish.

Now, having read it nonstop last night and finished it around 8:00AM this morning, I am compelled to join the chorus of praise for this story. It was written *41* *years* *ago* and still reads fresh and utterly captures the reader. While some of its elements have since been copied as SF cliches, the originality and brilliance of this work still towers over the genre.

The timeless power of "The Stars My Destination" (originally and aptly named "Tiger! Tiger!") is exactly what defines a true literary classic; one that I will read again and again. Hopefully not all in one night each time, though...

Summary: A unique character i'll always remember
Comment: This is the story of a mysteriously important, revenge-crazed, invalid named Gulliver Foyle who lives in a world where nearly every human beings has the ability to teleport. Quite a premise I'd say so if you're expect a good book, you would be wrong; it's an AMAZING book. Foyle's psychological drives and his personal metamorphasis make him an extremely well developed character placed at the center of an expertly crafted plot. However, Mr. Foyle is not your typical hero, in fact he's more of a deceptively resourceful anti-hero who rapes, takes advantage of others, is completely ruthless and yet remains the one I was rooting for. I was captivated by each convoluted twist, which never seemed to stop, and when it finally came together at the end, I sighed a breath of awe and then felt somewhat sad that the story had come to a close. I congragulate Alfred Bester on creating such a memorable character and I recommend this book to any serious SciFi fan and even to those who aren't.

Summary: ... is filthy death for us
Comment: Among the voluminous piles of predictable spaceships-and-aliens tomes of classic sci-fi, once in a while you'll find an off-kilter underground gem like this. Bester's bizarro novel from 1956 was way ahead of its time, at least in terms of sheer weirdness and cracked feats of the imagination. In this story, Bester has imagined a sci-fi future that is depressingly realistic - the miracles of interplanetary travel have been turned toward corporate profiteering, those who have learned teleportation and telepathy have used them for self-interested and criminal pursuits, and humans are still warring with themselves but now from different planets. This frantic universe and the frenetic story told here are being navigated by a quite strange character named Gully Foyle, whose relentless quest for personal revenge accidentally turns him into the nearly godlike figure that he narcissistically assumed himself to be. Gully's bizarre trips through Bester's strange universe will be matched only by the trippiness in your own brain, as you digest this story that was decades ahead of its time, if only for the very depths of its strangeness.
