Summary: First Test
Comment: In fantasy, generally, the idea of girl turned warrior is overdone, and most of the time, very badly done. One main exception was the entire Song of the Lionness quartet, which I highly recommend reading before First Test. So, when I heard Tamora Pierce had written another book about a female knight - I looked to it with high expectations. Mostly, this book lives up to the previous Song of the Lionness quartet...in potential at least. Keladry is not as memorable a character as Alanna, and it is reading the surrounding characters that makes the book worthwhile. The minor characters and lesser protagonists have made much more of an impact in my mind than Keladry. The story at times is trite - but I won't hold that against it, that occurs in the best of the best fantasy and especially in 'young adult' reads. I mean, what can you do differently in a book about warrior training and facing difficulties with bullies, etc? Yet, despite that, it holds enough suspense that I am eagerly awaiting the next addition to the series. Overall, this book is worthwhile reading (especially since you get to see Alanna, Daine, and Numair among others again!), but I wouldn't classify it among Pierce's best.

Summary: It was great!
Comment: For Christmas my mom got me Wild Magic and once I had it I had to get the rest! When the liberary got this one I had to read it! In this book Kel is the youngest in her family and wants to be a knight after coming back from the islands. King Jon passed a law 10 years ago that girls can be knights. So when Kel gets there the welcome she gets is less then warm. Her only friend is Duke Baird's son, Neal. Even the guy in charge of the pages doesn't like her! I'm not going to tell you the rest, but she learned her lessons in the islands. Pierce's girls don't act, think or look alike. So when you read them you wonder what Daine would have done or how Alanna would have handled it. I have been waiting with baited breath for the 2nd since I read this one! I hope that Pierce will keep them coming. Although I want to know what happened to Alanna's daughter?

Summary: Another great book by Tammy!
Comment: When I got this book, I thought that it would be pretty much the same as the Lioness series, but I was proved wrong. While this series has the same theme, about a girl going against the grain, trying to prove girls are just as good as guys, Tamora Pierce managed to make it completely different. The character, Kel, has her own personality, fears, and ambitions. Pierce tied many of her other characters in as well. Alanna the Lioness is what motivates Kel, along with her mother. This series isn't called the Protector of the Small series for nothing! As the story goes, Kel stands up for smaller kids, and ends up getting multiple black eyes, bruises, and trips to the "stump" for her efforts, making both friends, and enemies, along the way.
Over all, this book was funny, warm, and satisfying. I definitely recommend it to girls (and guys!) if your looking for a good read.
