Summary: Island Justice was a joy to read!
Comment: I was captured by the book from the beginning. Not having experienced island life myself, I was fascinated by the "summer" and "year-round" mentality, intrigue and characters. Ms. Winthrop brought their trials, loves and interests to life. I would definately read another book by this author.

Summary: Island Justice
Comment: This is a gripping read in which the author uses the microcosm of a society on an island off New England not only to create a highly suspenseful story but also to tellingly engage broader themes, such as romance between people of a certain age, environmentalism and disparities in wealth. While the main characters are compelling, the secondary characters--most of them the year-round people who live on this island that's a summer home to the rich--are so vividly drawn that it is they who lend the book its special piquancy.

Summary: Telling is still no substitute for showing
Comment: One of the oldest cliches in writers' workshops is the expression "show don't tell." It means, in substance, that most good fiction reveals its characterization and plot by exposing the reader to the actions and dialogue of the book's players, rather than by telling us how those players felt and thought about everything. Sadly, this effort by Winthrop--author of a *riveting* short story called "The Golden Darters"--could have used a significantly heavier editorial hand in this department. The principal conflict in the book, that of the bombastic sherriff and his dog-training wife, is almost entirely revealed to us through long, dreary omniscient narratives about how it made the wife *feel* to be pushed around by her husband. If we can't see it for ourselves, who cares? Can't recommend this one--didn't even bother to finish it. The sad fact is that, in writing as with most other arenas of human endevor, cliches become cliches because they're true. Do yourself a favor and give this one a miss.
