Comment: Around 50 years ago, when I was a little girl, an elderly friend gave me a copy of Raggedy Ann in Cookie Land. I loved it and read it over and over throughout my chldhood and even my teen years. Yes, it's a little hokey, but I loved it anyway. Sure you can buy lots of slick new storybooks for kids, but I'll take the kiddie lit of the 30s and 40s any time. No violence, no blood, no discussions of wizardry or farting, but just plain good fantasy for children.

Summary: An oldie, but definately not a goodie!
Comment: Recently, I was caught up in the newest wave of the Raggedy-Ann craze, so I purchased all of books for my daughter without reading them. This, so-called-classic is a run-on story about Hookie-the- Goblin wanting to make Raggedy Ann and Andy into noodle soup. He persues them and their friends Mr. Weakie, and the cookie family,relentlessly; wishing to do them harm. Mr. Weakie pushes the Goblin into a pot of hot water; Mr. Cookie hits the Goblin and breaks off his own arm; a burning cookie duck is thrown on the Goblins'nose, as he howls away in pain; and the cookie cow throws him over the fence and is very happy about it.He cookie-naps the cookie children, and finally he brings a friend to help him capture the bunch. On and on the violence goes, quite unbelievable! I don't want my daughter to remember this when she plays with her rag doll!
I stopped reading it to my daughter, mid-story, as she waited patiently, and as I searched desperately for some redeeming qualities. I realize Gruelle wrote the Raggedy Ann stories for an ill daughter, but I hardly find this one amusement, it is quite sick!
