Summary: A Thoughtful and Novel Approach to US Constitutional Law
Comment: This book is a brilliantly concise survey of contemporary constitutional analysis. Professor Griffin outlines the various camps of constitutional thought with remarkable clarity and very careful citation. Regardless of the depth of thought or difficulty of the subject matter, Professor Griffin lays out the positions of all sides in this unique and novel book. This book should find its way on the shelves of any lawyer, historian, scholar or political scientist interested in the US Constitution. This book combines original scholarship with an accessible writing style. A true pleasure.

Summary: Self-serving Simplicity
Comment: I will review this book by offering an interpretation that is somewhat different from a learned review already posted.
Douglas S. Reed, The Law and Politics Book Review "Steven M. Griffin...has written an excellent introduction to American constitutional theory that not only provides an overview of the legal academy's major contributions to constitutional theory, but also incorporates significant findings of political science and historical research on both American political development and judicial behavior . . . ."
If you can actually get past the academise of this review, i.e., the reference to "significant findings of political science and historical research," then you realize that what is really taking place in Griffin's book is a self-serving attempt to criticize the founders of the United States of America as self-interested slave-owners, lacking political and social vision. The book is also characterized by the absence of psychological and political realism. It is idealistic to the point of being childish.
The learned review continues: "American Constitutionalism is a compelling work, one that admirably integrates disparate fields of inquiry and produces an energetic view of constitutional theory. It makes a significant contribution to constitutional theory and could set the agenda for a wide array of explorations into the normative and empirical dimensions of constitutional politics." --This text refers to the hardcover edition of this title
To this I would only like to add that the book is also a non-intentional, adroit exposition of the various realms of academic careerism, undertaken with every professional expedient and considerable energy. Beyond that, it COULD set an agneda for a wide array of explorations into the normative and empirical dimensions of politics, but it does not actually do that. Because when all is said and done, this is a book that is good for making an academic career but bad for the intellect.
