Summary: A new model for feminism?
Comment: Elshtain's ideas on the direction of modern feminism are very well presented here. For those who believe that feminism turned its back on mothers & children, this book satisfies with a complex & articulate new model for American feminism. Can the modern equal rights movement for women inject itself with the values & experiences women get as mothers? Will that elevate public discourse & the moral integrity of feminism?
Elstain may overstate the significance (& existence!) of the public/private distinction. And for my money, she fails to link the best values of family to the best values of active citizenship. A fear of politics (the public sphere) drives much of her philosophy. But for those who feel feminism needs new life to conquer the corrupt public sphere of politics, Elshtain may be a voice worth listening to.
Check out Mary Dietz or Pateman for an alternative.
