Summary: Good read, great illustrations
Comment: I think the writing in Scientific American tends to be uneven it its style and level of sophistication, but the articles in this collection are all written clearly and suitable for someone with a grounding in science and an interest in biology. The illustrations are excellent and are alone worth the price of admission (but you need to read the text to understand what's what in the illustrations).
There are ten chapters here, each 10-20 pages long. Early chapters cover the basics, like "The Neuron" and "The Molecular Basis of Communication Between Cells", and the selections move through higher levels of complexity until we reach "The Functional Architecture of the Retina" and "Transplantation in the Central Nervous System". Each article is written by a major researcher in the field. A good book for anyone curious about the topic.
