Summary: pretty good!
Comment: Wow! This series has really improved since the 2000 version . . . and it is in color! (This series is for the version 2002 programs, which are part of Office XP - which replaces the Office 2000 programs.) I wasn't really planning to buy any of these books this time around until I looked a little more closely at them. They are very nice! So I bought them all!
Basically, the Microsoft Press Step by Step series is geared to teach a beginner how to use each application program in step by step lessons. Even though they start from the beginning, these books are also great for intermediate and advanced users. More advanced users can also go to the Microsoft Press "Inside Out" Series, which is more of a comprehensive reference (the Inside Out Series replaces the "Running" Series).
This book has several nice features: steps are clearly numbered; figures and screen images are in color; there is a comprehensive quick reference, glossary, and index; and a cd is included for additional study. One of the nicest new features is a section that lists all of the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) objectives, and shows the page numbers in the book where the objectives are taught - this is a great help in preparation for the MOUS certification exams.
This book contains 14 chapters: Creating a Presentation; Working with a Presentation; Printing a Presentation; Outlining Your Ideas; Adding and Modifying Slide Text; Applying and Modifying Design Templates; Viewing and Changing Presentation Colors; Drawing and Modifying Shapes; Inserting Information into PowerPoint; Setting Up and Delivering a Slide Show; Creating a Multimedia Presentation; Creating a Web Presentation; Reviewing and Sharing a Presentation; and Customizing PowerPoint.
I also recommend Microsoft Office XP Introductory Concepts and Techniques; Microsoft Office XP Advanced Concepts and Techniques; and Microsoft Office XP Post Advanced Concepts and Techniques by Gary B. Shelly, et al.

Summary: Great For Getting Started With PowerPoint!
Comment: Before starting grad school earlier this year I had never had any reason to know how to use PowerPoint, but when the time came to learn, I had to get with it fast. The directions that come with the stand alone Microsoft product are pretty weak, so I bought this manual as the best for comprehensiveness and being comprehendible by an average MS Word user.
This book is not for the super technical, programmer types, but works great for the other 95% of us. I like that it is in color, and steps you through commands EXACTLY as they will appear onscreen. I have been able to do anything I have needed to do, and still frequently use this book as a reference. Earlier in the week I consulted it about putting video into a slide, which I had never done before. Now I have a very dramatic multimedia presentation that looks great.
The salient point here is that I am not a huge PowerPoint expert, but this book makes me look like one. I gave it four stars only because it is a quite expensive book (remember it has all pages printed in color, and has a practice CD included), in fact twice the cost of many competing books. Although it is pricey, in the long run it is totally worth the expense.

Summary: Good for the average Joe
Comment: I bought this series of books for the people at the office. They are easy to understand and pretty much anyone learnt something new. This book is not for computer geeks.. Too basic for you...
Good for the average Joe
