Summary: Accomplished Writer Hits Nail
Comment: This is simply a good book from cover to cover. The writing style is quick, contemporary, clear, colorful, and enjoyable. The Introduction titled "Thrilled by a Thriller" accurately: 1) describes the basic story of Brown's book; 2) documents fan response (they believe Brown's book is based on fact); 3) proves that Dan Brown is indeed claiming that his book re-tells history as it really happened; and 4) summarizes the three questions relevant to The Da Vinci Code:
"Does it correctly present historical facts. . . . Does it properly interpret classic works of art. . . . Does it accurately represent the religious belief systems upon which so much of its plot is based-namely, Christianity and Gnosticism" (p. 10).
In 5 short chapters, Abanes deftly exposes Brown's false statements, misuse of historical documents, wild assertions based on hearsay, and bizarre claims about countless aspects of history.
I especially respect the way Abanes himself remained respectful to Brown, even though he did not hesitate to demonstrate just how far out in left field Brown is. Abanes clearly feels that this is not even a Christian vs. non-Christian issue, but instead states that it is a truth vs. falsehood issue. As he says: "The Da Vinci Code would still be just as offensive if its misrepresentation of historical facts were used to attack Buddhism, Islam, or any other world religion instead of Christianity" (p. 77).
Really a super-duper job.

Summary: Right On!
Comment: I tried to post this review earlier, but for some reason the review never made it online, so here I go again-only because I believe it is very important that people understand how great a book Abanes has produced.
Abanes is an accomplished author who has stuffed just about all of the information the average person would need to: 1) talk intelligently about The Da Vinci Code; 2) respond to Dan Brown fans who say the novel is based on fact.
Unlike the other responses to Dan Brown, Abanes seems to have wanted to do several different things for different audiences. Christians get information that helps defend Christianity; 2) Roman Catholics get material that deflects the most outrageous claims by Brown; and 3) secular readers get a great crop of facts without hearing any religious preaching.
This is clearly the volume that stands head and shoulders above the other books about Da Vinci. I say this wih no malice, but simply as an observation. Abanes gives the reader all the facts they need to make an informed decision about Brown's book, and without much of an agenda except to get the truth to people. Money will be well-specnt on this book
FAVORITE QUOTES: "Extrico subjectio quod verum ero evidens." (p. 10) "This is not even a "Christian" issue. The issue is fact versus fiction. Truth versus lies. Accuracy versus inaccuracy" (p. 77).

Summary: Bible Referencing and Simplistic
Comment: Instead of citing historical documents or even mentioning the French parchments which base the foundation of Dan Brown's fictional novel, this author personally attacks the credentials of the authors that Brown used as a foundation for his book.
Do the inventions of Edison and Tesla mean any less because they weren't studied engineers?
The rest of the book references the bible as proof against other major points. If you are looking for solid history, get a different book. If you are looking to have your faith restored, I'll sell you mine cheap.
