Summary: Thank you God
Comment: I purchased this book initially because I was interested in the subject. Not a medical person or psychiatrist of any sort, I just thought it was something that I would enjoy looking into. For those that know how the subconscious works, you'll appreciate the fact that I discovered that I was a victim of PTSD while delving into the subject. It was as if the universe was trying to tell me something. All I can say is that it opened my eyes and changed my life in ways I never knew possible.
For those interested in fiction dealing with a topic along these lines (and also Dissociative Identity Disorder) I would recommend reading a book called "Bark of the Dogwood" by Jackson McCrae. It's an intricate study of PTSD and packs quite a wallop.

Summary: Not so Much for Multiples in here (as advertised).
Comment: Schiraldi believes DID to be a severe dissociative state. He believes, "there is only one person and one personality - but aspects of the personality have not yet been integrated." He says, "Whenever possible, treatment should move the patient toward a sense of integrated functioning and connectedness among the different alternate personalities. Distortions must be challenged. Treatment modalities include psychodynamic, modified cognitive-behavioral, and hypnosis - most commonly for calming, soothing, containment, and ego strengthening."
I think that there has been much more work on PTSD then multiplicity and that it is less complicated than multiplicity, but that we can learn from it aspects of how dissociation works. I do not believe that the goal of therapy has to be integration. I do believe that the parts (alters) can reposition themselves; each to be living in the present. This is possible only when they are able to share common resources and have "out time." I resent having "parts" thought of as "distortions to be challenged," or that the purpose of my therapist could be to placate and contain. I am unsure of the role of an "ego."

Summary: Recovery Begins with Knowledge
Comment: I purchased this book in April after beginning therapy and first being diagnosed with chronic PTSD. I have suffered multiple traumas in my life: This book has been an excellent supplement to my therapy. It has helped me see fully realize the extent of my symptoms and also to see how the secondary symptoms have affected my relationships with others and thus gain perspective on much of the criticism I have endured through the years from colleagues and peers. PTSD affects all areas of the sufferer's life, including interpersonal relationships, school, the workplace, and the home. I am only now understanding how my PTSD has affected my life, and beginning to get a glimpse of a more positive future ahead. Futhermore, it has helped me to see that a positive support system is essential to recovery, and I do not have that within my family, so it will have to be cultivated from my friends. I also highly recommend this book for its straight forward, no nonsense style. I am a graduate business student at a top program and upon my diagnosis, I was able to integrate reading "Sourcebook" in with my heavy courseload without feeling like I was wasting time on a publication that was too much talk and not enough solution.
