Summary: Inaccurate Maps
Comment: Decent book for non-college students, but flawed geography. It has good non-map visuals and side articles. The reading is easy and informative.
My disappointment is with four of its maps. Two of the maps place Bosnia in the wrong place, or exaggerate its size. One naval battle map indicates a naval battle at Tsingtao on Aug. 23, 1915 (to which I have never heard of before). Tsingtao was a German base in China that was captured well before that date in 1915. They probably meant 1914. A map of Europe before WWI shows France controlling Alsace-Lorraine, and Turkey controlling the entire Adriatic coast! Even without the Balkan nations in existence yet (pre-1878), Turkey did not control Illyria in the 19th Century.
This book only gets 2 stars from me. A little proof-mapping would have given this book a better rating. Sloppy editing at Harcourt. They should be ashamed.
