Summary: A gamble that paid off
Comment: It is interesting to have a "right brained" skeptical scientist conduct these experiments with these mediums. He looks at the evidence objectively, and this evidence is quite compelling. Personally, this book did nothing to enhance my beliefs of an afterlife, as what I "know" inside myself is the strongest proof of all. I didn't need to read this book to confirm an afterlife. I read it to confirm my suspicions about these specific mediums (mainly John Edward)...that they are indeed the real deal. It is true that the experiments could've been much harder on the mediums, but no matter how controlled and rigorous an experiment is, you could never dismiss their ability to read the minds of the subjects if they actually can talk to the deceased. And are skeptics actually going to admit that mind-reading is actually a possibility in order to debunk mediumship? This book is the best out there on this subject. If you're struggling to grasp the concept of life after death, this book may give you further insight into the possibility of it. But there is so much more to understand, spiritually, and how the "other side" works. Only your spiritual growth will determine what you understand and when.

Summary: I hoped for something better-- came up really short.
Comment: I commend Dr. Gary Schwartz for attempting to place phenomena such as 'mediums' and the afterlife into the scientific eye. He does make an attempt, but his writing style and process was too flowery and pie-eyed. Yes, the numbers of 'hits' were higher than in a control situation, but most of the book was conjecture.
What I don't understand, is when a medium is able to come up with astounding detail, yet each one comes up with "They're telling me about someone with an 'M' name..." Hell, everyone on the planet knows several people (live or dead) that had a name that began with M. In many ways, James Randi is correct in stating that most of the sitters (people that are being read by mediums) are gullible, driven by the love and desperation to have further contact with departed loved ones. Scientifically, it would have been better to make a more broadened case by including people who didn't know too many dead people or weren't close to them.
Around 70% of the book appears as if Deepak Chopra wrote it, as it is filled with dripping, honeyed love of others-- continuation of the heart, blah blah. If this book was an attempt to bring current "scientifically unexplained" phenomena into a laboratory-tested arena, then it should have stated any phenomena in an exact and concise way.
One last thing, the mediums were very general in around 70% of their readings ("an older man- he could be a grandfather or father") c'mon-- most of what they were saying could have pertained to most anyone. Of the few right-ons that were observed, the generalizations should have lowered the overall mark.

Summary: debunk the debunkers...
Comment: So, I'm supposed to believe this book is bunk and is not objective based upon an article that appeared in a publication "objectively" entitled Skeptical Inquirer? I'll pass on that one.
I do think this study's methodology is not perfect, but I don't think you're going to find perfect methodology to study life after death phenomena. It comes down to faith in the long run. I think this book is an interesting study of mediumship. One of those read it and decide for yourself books.I wouldn't take it as proof, but it is encouraging. I'm just weary of holier-than-thou skeptics and their arrogant, flawed methods of "debunking" and review. They are no more scientific or objective than anyone else.
