Summary: Didn't love the love stsory
Comment: I was really expecting to fall in love with this book after reading all of the other positive reviews, but have to admit that I was disappointed. I did enjoy the historical aspect of the book and I did learn many interesting tidbits about Washington's life that I previously did not know. But I never felt the "love story" aspect until the last ten pages or so. It was obvious that George felt deep emotion for Martha (or Patsy, as he called her), but it seemed more of a comfort, security and convenience based relationship on his part. Clark refers to their love for eachother repetitively, but I was never able to feel the passion of it until the last pages when the dialogue actually contained the words, "I love you." The only thing Washington truly showed any outward passion for was his home, Mount Vernon. And an ongoing obsession with an old friend's wife.
I found myself disappointed in Washington's demeanor and motivations. There was a perpetually underlying theme of depression and he never seemed happy with his lot in life (he would definitely be in therapy if he was alive now). I got the impression that he resented having been chosen as our first President and I found myself resenting him in return. It spoiled my childhood illusions of our great leader.
The book contained little depth and the conversations were simple and bland. Clark's writing style is simple and reflects a style that is used simply for the mass marketing of a book;one that will appeal to the general population. The style lacks originality and individuality.
Overall, this book was a quick and easy read. The story was simple and the plot superficial. It was generally pleasant, but not close to being on of those books you just can't put down.

Summary: A nice change of pace...
Comment: I don't normally read Mary Higgins Clark's books, but I decided to give this one a try. It was a fast and interesting read, and I enjoyed it very much.
This book was first written in 1969, and is being republished for the first time. It's a book that flashes between George Washington leaving the Presidency in 1797, and his memories of his life, from the beginning, then to when he met Martha ("Patsy") Custis. He grows fonder and fonder of Patsy, and when she is widowed with two young children to raise, he realizes that he really does love her, and marries her. We also read of the trials and tribulations of their life together, and of Washington's many accomplishments and defeats. I'm not sure how historically accurate this book really is, but I enjoyed it. Clark makes the people come alive, and we really do care about George and Patsy. A nice surprize from a book that I didn't think I'd like!

Summary: Mount Vernon Love Story
Comment: The Love of George and Martha Washington
"He will make a fine president." Mary Higgins Clark in Mount Vernon Love Story expresses strong emotions and feelings that George and Martha Share during his presidency. The author's purpose of this novel is to demonstrate the historical background and culture of the eighteenth century. The majority of the story takes place in Philadelphia, but at other times it includes other settings such as Mount Vernon. The whole story is about George Washington's thoughts during this time. Throughout the whole book it talks about George Washington's life accomplishments. Mount Vernon Love Story takes us to two distinctive time periods. Each chapter alternates between two frames, one which is 1797, the last day of Washington's presidency. The other chapter starts from 1745, taking us back to his childhood on Ferry Farm until he made his first definitive step towards presidency. The story also focuses on many of the women who had an impact on his like such as his wife, Martha Washington. This book is the first book that Mary Higgins Clark has ever written. It shows clearly the language she uses. The style she uses is very plain and dull in Mount Vernon Love Story. The story does not have an easy flow to it. It's very difficult to follow and understand because it flashes back a numerous amount of times. It is not like any of Clarks other works.
The characters in Mount Vernon Love Story are easy to understand. George Washington is a stiff and conservative man that all he wants is to accomplish his goal in life. He watches John Adams inauguration and he reflects on the events that led him to his becoming the first president. George Washington's mother Mary Bell Washington was a very strict, domineering and controlling woman.
The setting in Mount Vernon Love Story is mainly in Philadelphia around 1779. The story had many flashbacks that refer to when he was a little boy. It talks about George Washington in 1745 when he first decided that one day he wanted to be president, and he took his first steps in becoming president.
The plot of the story begins with a young boy who had decided that he wanted to be president one day. In the eighteenth century he finally achieved his goal in life. The book talks about his love for Martha Washington and her helping him achieve his goal he had always wanted to accomplish. The story is written in first person to show that the book is Washington's thoughts. It also includes second person to show the other persons perspective.
In Mount Vernon Love Story, Mary Higgins Clarks writing is very inattentive to the reader. The book is very difficult to understand. It flashes back and forth between two different time periods imparticular. The story has on major action within it. This is not a book to recommend.
