Summary: A diamond in a genre laden with steaming piles of turds
Comment: I happened across a copy of 'beyond the deepwoods' in my local libaray while browsing the shelves of teenage fiction for something that wasnt about boys, spots or the "mysterious case of the missing lipstick"....basically anything not based on shallow rubbish. The cover caught my eye because I noticed it was, well a pretty good drawing. On reading the back of the book it informed me of the fact that the book was about Twig, who lived with woodtrolls in a place called the deepwoods...so far so good, not a puberty related subject in sight. On the negative side it seemed a little young for me and unfortunately had the caption "for those who have read harry potter and want a new world to explore". However I got it out and began reading and upon finishing decided the caption should be "for those who realise that Harry Potter is an overated pile of horse poo and want to read something thats actually good". Hehe. I am using Harry potter for my comparison because a) it seems that the book is being compared to the HP series by critics and b) because I did read some harry potter and thought...yeah its okay, then a movie came out...then another movie...and I have now decided...wow harry potter is an abomination to the film industry and dare I say in hindsight (now at 16) an insult to the edge chronicles. Unlike HP which places a "new world inside a world" (ooo muggles and wizards in london how fabulous) the edge chronicles is completely different. It takes place in an entirely made up place. The Edge, if your interested, where many, many, many, many creatures exist. The tone of the book is darker, edgier and not at all insulting to a readers intelligence. Instead of cliched one dimensional characters who run about with wands and say "Hey im late for potions class gosh darnit" you have Twig a character who doesnt annoy the hell out of you and actually does things that are interesting. Adopted by a family of woodtrolls twig realises it is time for him to stray from the woodtroll path and seek his destiny (dundundun) beyond the deepwoods....His journey is riddled with challenges, dangers and the plot twists and turns as paul stewarts imaginative world springs to life. Instead of brooms(yawn)we have sky pirate ships(wayhay) as opposed to teachers (boo) we have slaughters, banderbears, waifs, woodtrolls (i wont go on and spoil the rest I think you get the idea). READ THIS and free yourself from the shackles of trashy fantasy. I mean what did Harry really do? oooo he was a baby and a wizard with bad aim gave him a scar then he goes on to encounter this wizard in every single damn book...yeah...thats well done. Give this series a try, it doesnt stop at this book as their are two other books with twig and a few more concerning other characters which were also extremely well done. Im DETERMINED to stop people (of all ages) conforming to the harry potter fan club and giving those damn books more profit! (Can subliminal advertising be executed through text?) Maybe The edge chronicles wont make millions of pounds in the cinema and you wont walk into warner brothers to find overpriced stuffed owls and plastic wands but Twig would kill Harry Potter in a fight any day of the week (without a flaming wand).

Summary: the first book in the edge chronicles
Comment: this book is one of my favorites, I was given it as a present when I was seven and didn't like it, but I re-read it recently and I loved it!
The book is about Twig, a young misfit who has left the village where he grew up to find out who he really is, he meets all sorts of weird creatures, like the gyle goblins or the caterbird, and horrible cratures, like the skullpelt or the rotsuker, along the way.
this book is exellant and I would recomend it to anyone.
