Summary: An outstanding collection of personal accounts.
Comment: Though somewhat choppy in places, this book provides an interesting glimpse into the very controversal Waffen-SS. Through the recollections of Waffen-SS vets, the author paints a broad, but somewhat shallow, of life in this organization. Further, and perhaps most interesting, is the inclusion of a section on the war crimes committed by some Waffen-SS groups. It's interesting to hear what the men who served in this organization think of such atrocities. Somewhat expensive, but an excellent and informative book.

Summary: A Shining Gem of Historical Information.
Comment: I always prefer to read history books written by those who were actually there. You've seen documentaries and articles condemning the SS as a monstrously evil organization bent on exterminating all non-Germans.However,the picture painted in this book is not the biased view of a single author,it is actually composed of highly detailed recollections and interviews of the officers and men of various SS units throughout the war. These men were as human as you or I,with friends, family, dreams and fears. It seems that once again history has been written by the winners and the loser's name dragged through the mud. But in this case you never hear of the horrid atrocities also committed by Canadians,Americans,Russians,Brits, and especially Poles during the war years.this book is refreshingly unbiased, even from the point of view of the former SS men themselves. Here are tales of heartwarming kindness and humanity between Russians and Germans alongside the daily horror of all out war. reading these accounts is like sitting with your grandfather and listening wide-eyed to his tales of honor and life on the edge in wartime. You can almost hear the waiver in their voices as the veterans recall tragedy and triumph, The thrill and terror of their memories impressive even today. -I loved it.

Summary: Fianlly, the SS in an objective view and in their own words
Comment: This was a well done peicing together of the history of the SS, its roots in both poltical and socio-economic facets of german society and its evolution as told through the eyes of the members of the SS themselves. It was done tastefully, objectively, and with an emphasis on provider the reader with a look into their lives as soldiers, nothing more.
