Summary: Nice Little Intro Book
Comment: * Michael Green and Greg Stewart's MODERN US TANKS & AFVS is a short
survey of modern US military armored vehicles, with an emphasis on the
M1 Abrams heavy tank, but with materials on other prominent weapons
including the Bradley MICV series and its variations, such as the
MLRS rocket launcher; the eight-wheel LAV armored car series used by
the Marines and now the Army; a number of variations of the "Hummer"
truck; various models of modern US Marine "amtracs"; and
some materials on the "legacy" M113 armored personnel
carrier and the M109 155 millimeter self-propelled gun.
This is a fairly quick trip through the subject and nowhere near a
definitive document, but MODERN US TANKS & AFVS is a perfectly
reasonable short survey and, given the low price, a good buy for
beginners or someone (like me) with a relatively casual interest in
the subject. Like other entries in the MOTORBOOKS INTERNATIONAL
Enthusiast Color Series, it is very tidily laid out and has a nice
assortment of first-class spiffy color photographs.
I suppose I could ask for more -- a set of comparative side views of
the different Bradley, LAV, or Hummer subvariants would have been
really nice -- but given the focus and, again, the low price, I can't
complain. I did spot one amusing error, with the authors saying that
"FLIR" stands for "Forward Looking Infrared RADAR", but everybody
screws up a little putting together a substantial and detailed
document, and I'd lay that at the feet of the editor, who should catch
such minor slipups.

Summary: An Excellent Book on Tanks and AFVs
Comment: Modern U.S. Tanks and AFVs condenses hard-to-find information into an attractive an easy-to-read format. The four chapters are Tanks, Armored Infantry Vehicles, Wheeled Armored Firepower and Indirect Armored Fire Support. The photography is uniformly excellent and the book's color reproduction is unusually high in quality. A glance at the credits shows that the authors went out of their way to get information from people directly involved with the development, fielding, operation and support of these vehicles. This book provides an easy way to learn about the latest developments in ground combat current technology and tactics. Highly recommended.

Summary: A Great Reference
Comment: Mike Green and Greg Stewart have done another outstanding job with "Modern U.S. Tanks & AFVs." This impressive single-source reference provides a very informative overview of U.S. armored vehicles. The photographs are impressive and include some rarely seen photos. This book will be an important addition to the library of anyone interested in the subject of modern U.S. armor.
