Title: Understanding Wood Finishing: How to Select and Apply the Right Finish by Bob Flexner ISBN: 0-7621-0191-1 Publisher: Readers Digest Pub. Date: March, 1999 Format: Paperback Volumes: 1 List Price(USD): $16.95 |
Average Customer Rating: 4.9 (39 reviews)
Rating: 3
Summary: Not everything the other reviewers claimed
Comment: I just recently bought this book - I've read it twice. My thoughts are as follows:
1. The book has some good information.
2. The book is lacking in some important respect. After having twice read the book I still had numerous questions about finishes that the book did not answer. I though this book would answer all my questions.
3. I find the layout of the book so so - I could of thought of at least a couple of ways to improve the user friendliness of the book.
Overall a reasonable book. Not a great book.
Rating: 5
Summary: Indispensable for any finishing job
Comment: Anyone investing a substantial amount of time creating a quality woodworking project realizes that a shoddy, hastily-applied finish can ruin both the appearance of the piece, and the attitude of the artist.
Flexner's book is a categorically detailed text of what to do correctly, and what to avoid. Supplementing the general text are highlighted tips, specific step-by-step "how-to" instructions, and tables to graphically summarize points detailed in the text.
Which thinner in a shellac, lacquer, or varnish would act as a solvent and ruin the stain or undercoat finish? Can the advertising on the product labels always be trusted? If you would like to KNOW rather than guess, buy this book and get the knowledge to give yourself the potential to produce a finish worthy of the time spent on the woodworking.
Rating: 5
Summary: The Upmost Book On Finishing
Comment: THis is it fellow woodworkers/finishers to be. This book just tells it like it is. Need not look any further for a better book on this art. It covers everything and actually keeps you from wasting money on those "Mystery" finishes by telling you how to make your own. pLenty of great truths in this one.
