Summary: For collectors--the illustrations are glorious
Comment: It's the most beautifully illustrated edition of Wind in the Willows I've ever found, but the abridgement is a disappointment. It's not immediately apparent that the stories themselves have been "updated" along with the illustrations, and I don't recommend this edition for the most satisfying read. However, for those who love to collect children's books, and find pleasure in revisiting old and beloved stories with new eyes, these books are a true bargain for the illustrations alone.

Comment: As i clicked on the icon to review this book, i wondered if any of the other reviewers shared my same feelings...as it turns out, the only other reviewer shares my exact same sentiment.

The Illustrations in this set are phenominal...probably some of the best illustrations i've seen for the Wind in the Willows...The slipcover is really nice, and its very asthetic and user friendly for little ones...

Unfortunately, this is a severely edited abridged edition of this book, and its a shame. This is not really a book that warrants abridging, and despite what the notes on the jacket say, the abridging done was not really done in a fashion that is helpful to young readers; in fact, some elements of the original that i find most crucial have been severely hacked. i.e. the final chapter, known to me since childhood as "the Return of Ulysses", homaging the Odyssey, was changed to the Return of Toad. Do the editors believe that alliteration is a concept that children cannot fathom? Also, the second book is geared to be a seperate entity from the first, "the Adventures of Mr. Toad" and chapters are rearranged to accomodate this. Its actually a crime.

Anyways, despite the fact that I was resentful about this, I purchased the set anyway, because the illustrations are unavoidably good. But I still have been searching all over for an edition that was complete and with good illustrations to boot.

Summary: Buy this book for its wonderful pictures!
Comment: I'm a diehard fan of _Wind in the Willows_--and a purist who thinks that Shepard's illustrations aren't authentic because they aren't Rackham (the illustrator of MY childhood copy). And I hate abridgement. So go figure: I love this new illustration of Wind in the Willows, principally because it brings to life the atmosphere of the book in a wonderful way that resonates with my own strong feelings. I'm not fond of abridgements in general, and the "Pipers at the Gates of Dawn" chapter, strange as it might be, is central to the book and therefore its omission leaves a gaping hole; nonetheless, I recommend the book for its illustrations alone--one could read the original text along with Moore's atmospheric art.
