Summary: Brilliant Sequel to Kushiel's Dart
Comment: In Kushiel's Chosen, Jacqueline Carey has written a phenomenal successor to Kushiel's Dart. The novel picks up where Kushiel's Dart ends and takes the beautiful, bull-headed, intelligent, vain, patriotic and conflicted heroine, Phèdre nó Delaunay de Montrève, on further adventures to distant, fascinating lands. It begins with a well-executed mystery (where is the captivating Melisande hiding?) and progresses through a wild series of misadventures into a thoughtful story about the consequences of one's actions and the act of redemption. In between, we find ourselves caught up once again in the tumultuous relationship between Phèdre and Joscelin. Stubborn courage and their love for each other are the only things they have in common. Can such opposites remain together? Once again, Carey's characters are complex and deal with issues that we can reflect on in ourselves. Another strength of both books is the artful way that Carey has of creating complex, believable religions. Kushiel's Chosen is a fitting sequel to Carey's first brilliant novel.

Summary: A rarity in a sea of mediocrity
Comment: When I had first read the books, I had never heard of the author and had no idea what I was getting into. The description of the book intrigued me and so I went ahead on instinct and sped through the nine hundred page Dart. What I had gotten into was a world that both transcended ours, and connected with it. Far from taking history and building upon it, Carey has taken history and reshaped it: anyone can see the similarities, and no matter how hard you look, you can always find another astounding fact holding together her finely woven fiction together in a skeleton of steel.
Chosen continues Phedre's adventures in the richly detailed and elaborate world. The depth of research Carey has put into the setting shows through once again in Chosen where you can trace the etymology of nearly every non-English word to their origins, and the people to their models. Here following Phedre takes the reader on a journey around the alternate Europe; beyond the borders of Terre d'Ange to the Mediterranean and across the high seas.

Summary: Simply Spectacular
Comment: My disillusionment with fantasy has only deepened these last few months, but this book and it's predecessor...are incredible! I can't say this enough, I love these books! This sequel to the amazing Kushiel's Dart is every bit as good as the first. Phedre has somehow become even more magnetic and enthralling. Her adventures take her everywhere in this book, opening up the alterna-world of Carey's creation. The world is sublime, the cultures rich and textured and the people are fantastic. The action scenes and plot twists are enough to make you gasp outloud and scare the cat sleeping at your feet. It's been so long since a book has really and truly surprised me, I almost forgot what it felt like. This book has everything fantasy fantatics need and want, while throughing in things you didn't even know you wanted! I'd better stop before I run out of adjectives. Just one more thing, if you really want to try something different, please, please pick this book up, I promise you won't regret it.
