Summary: Good book for beginner
Comment: I'm a beginner of 3ds Max myself. I felt comfortable through all the tutorials with it's plain English and clear step-by-step instroctions.
But, if you are a 100% newbie of 3sd Max, you might consider read "3ds max 4 for Windows: Visual QuickStart Guide" first for the basics concept & familiarity of the usser interface.
Once you got the rough idea of Max, you can jump into this book for some more serious stuffs.
Otherwise, you might mess up like one of the reviwers.

Summary: Unique!
Comment: That's the first book that covers every step in creating a proffessional project. About 250 pages dedicated to modelling, an excellent guide to maxscript that helps you create menus that simplyfy the animation stage later on, riging-skinning, camera tracking and even an Combustion section for making the final cut...
The only thing I would have loved to see in addition were some hints for the "Visual Maxscript editor" which looked very promising to me.
Anyway... It's a must buy for every max artist who's ready to mature his skills as well as an excellent book even for newbies.

Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK!! WROTE FOR THE NEWBIES.
Comment: I was a total newbie when I bought this book, and it have really made me improve in almost every aspect that must be known in 3ds max. Of course if you already know advanced techniques you'll probably get bored with the book. In the animation aspect I think is a bit short (talking about teaching you how to simulate motion like the walking cicle for the alien and so.)But the tutorials in modeling are excellent and very easy to understand.
I really don't know if this is useful but I must say that I completed this tutorials with 3ds max 5 and there was no problem.
