Summary: You Can Go Home Again
Comment: Bravo to Haven Kimmel who with A Girl Named Zippy debunks two steadfast myths: 1)that people from Indiana aren't funny, and 2)that it is impossible to have a happy childhood. Given her small town, quirky family circumstances, it would have been easy for Ms. Kimmel to add to the heap of books venting introspective childhood angst. Instead she shows us the diamonds inside what most of us would perceive to be her lump of coal. This book is clever and laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end. Her grandmother's advice on how to keep a husband in line is priceless. Kimmel's perspective and quick-witted prose makes the book an unsuspected pleasure. I was intrigued enough to visit Mooreland on a recent trip to Indiana, because I had to see it for myself. It's hard to imagine all the excitement of Zippy's world happening in those four blocks of quiet houses. One only wonders if the talented author who sprung from these humble beginnings will be able to remain rooted in what ultimately makes her unique. A teasured addition to any shelf.

Summary: A pleasant journey through childhood.
Comment: A Girl Named Zippy is a pleasant journey through childhood in simpler times in Middle America before the introduction of video games, cell phones, compact disks, and personal computers (and all that they stand for); even that good old stand-by, the TV, didn't feature very prominently in Zippy's life. In these pages, you'll find the world from the viewpoint of a child, complete with eccentric grown-ups, childhood antics, pets, and the occasional creepy neighborhood kid (I could relate to that!). There were pleny of slow spots, particularly when the details of some events were a bit too drawn-out, leaving me with the feeling that the book was just a bit overdone. Still, nothing dramatic or shocking will be found here, nor the solution of world problems, just life-as-it-once-was for Haven "Zippy" Kimmel. A good light read, and for that reason, A Girl Named Zippy is decent entertainment.

Summary: What a great book!
Comment: I absolutely LOVED reading this book. It was funny, interesting, and well-written. Kimmel successfully shows the world through the eyes of a young girl in a small town. I couldn't help but laugh out loud throughout the book. I have recommended this to all of my friends, sisters, and my mom. What a fun book!
