Summary: Book was OK, software was not
Comment: This book was useful, but the software was a disappointment. the sofware was not very similar to the actual GRE test.

Summary: It's not worth it. Spend your money on other things.
Comment: Let me tell you, first and foremost, I did not buy this book, somebody bought it for me. On the cover of the book it says 5 full length practice tests. Out of those only three are CAT's. The other two are paper based. I had a lot of trouble with the software. I installed it on my computer and a menu came up with three items. ONLINE GRE CAT, ACCESS ADVISOR and ONLINE PETERSON'S. Anyone looking at this will figure that the first is a shortcut to taking it on the web, right? Wrong. The only one that works is ACCESS ADVISOR, which gives you a lot of information about financial aid. But what good is all that if you don't do well on the GRE and therefore cannot get in to the university of your choice? When I finally managed to get to the correct website, and login to take the test, this is what I found. It is NOTHING like the GRE CAT, with one exception which is - each test has 93 questions. First and foremost, the tests are not timed, it tells you to take all the time that you like. Which is pretty stupid because time is the worst enemy on the test for a lot of test-takers. The questions are not presented in a coherent order. Each section is distinguished from the other, but within the sections itself the questions are thrown together randomly. There is a lot of repetition from one test to the next, even though I was assured by the technical staff that, that just isn't possible. This is an extract from a reply I got from one of the staff members-

"The algorithm will not select the same question twice because it has been set not to do so. Even if the same essay is presented, a slight difference in nuance in the question still makes the test practicable, because ignoring the nuance will affect the correct answer and therefore the level at which is the next question is drawn from the database. The algorithm has been strenuously tested, so that confidence is there that it will produce what it was designed to produce, viz., an adaptive test that will test how well a question is interpreted by the test-taker in order to apply the relevant principles to produce a correct answer."

This answer is a great one, but it just isn't true. I took the third test(I have had a major problem with the second one) and 90% of the questions were identical. I did it with my eyes closed and the results below will show you what I mean. On the first test, I got VERBAL-746, QUANTITATIVE-800 and ANALYTICAL-750. On the third test I got VERBAL-800, QUANTITATIVE-800, ANALYTICAL-800. I am good, but not that good. My actual score is somewhere around the 1900-2000 range. On top of that, there is no way you can review the questions and answers to see where you went wrong. Not that I need to, especially with the third test. ALL OF THE QUESTIONS IN THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST ARE REPEATED ON ALL OF THE CAT's. My problems lie in the Analytical section. I just can't get my head around those questions. Therefore, I skipped the other sections and headed straight for the aforementioned. You guessed it, I was extremely disappointed. There are "11 pages, that's right, ELEVEN" alloted to the analytical part of the test. 238 pages are devoted to Quantitative and Verbal (combined, not 238 pages each), but you get barely anything for a section you should be able to get 800 on if you pratice enough and the strategies that you pick up from books like these are good. The only helpful feature is the support staff, who get back to you promptly. The verbal and the quantitative section (strategies, examples, solutions and explanations) are comprehensive, but the entire package is not worth it. Spend your money on Kaplan or ETS Powerprep. I am going to ask for my money back for this one, if I can.
